Introduction
My first book was entitled, Closet Ministry which dealt with various principles of prayer. Written almost twenty years ago, I dealt with what I believed was the missing piece in the universal church at that time: the ministry of prayer. The concept behind prayer being a missing ministry was the advent of other areas of focus in the Body of Christ. So many churches were catering to ministry areas such as children, media, stewardship, and other areas, but one of the less emphasized areas of ministry was the ministry of prayer. The aim of Closet Ministry was to stimulate and provide insight for the church to reprioritize getting back into the closet
of prayer as referenced in the book of Matthew, chapter 6. Jesus instructed the church to enter the closet
to pray and spend time alone with God. I still believe that is definitely a concept that is very useful and we, as believers, need to embrace it as a personal part of our lives. In addition, I now believe that because we went through an era of rebuking demonic forces and warfare and talking more to those demonic forces than to God, those concepts are very real and biblical; however, as I began to examine the ministry of Jesus and realized that when Jesus was bringing a person through a situation, it was not actually through prayer. It was more through a conversation.
From 2012 until now, I have gone through a critical season in my life. I found myself having more conversations with God and the Holy Spirit responding to me conversationally. A great example of this is found in John chapter 4 when Jesus met the Samaritan woman at the well. Jesus had a conversation with her. She did not pray. She talked with Him, and Jesus talked with her. Jesus talked her through the multiplicities of her relationships by meeting her through conversation. I was like, Wow! We’ve missed this!
It was an intimate conversational relationship with our God. We find throughout Scripture that when Jesus met with Peter, James, and John, in particular, He had a conversation with them. On several occasions, Jesus conversationally articulated his thoughts, so I started seeing all these conversations, i.e. personal engagements, between Jesus and others. Another such example is the conversation Jesus had with Nicodemus about what it truly meant to be born again (John 3). All these life-changing encounters were not through prayer as we have believed it to be, but through conversations with Divinity.
I have struggled through seasons of warfare and crisis because I could not simply bind and loose, shake, holler and scream. All I could do was talk to the Father and allow Him to talk to me. Every subject He talked
