Reclaiming Your Spiritual Inheritance - Vincent Carbone

    Introduction

As a science teacher, I get this question at least once a year from a student: Why do we need to know about _________? Fill in the blank with any subject matter you like such as weather, earthquakes, whatever. Depending upon the tone of the student asking the question, it could seem disrespectful. If it comes from a feisty, angry student glaring at me, the class quickly quiets down to a hush. The pressure is on the teacher as to how he or she reacts and responds. Everyone waits patiently for the teacher to respond. Silence.

The first time I was challenged like this, I took a deep breath and slowly delivered my response. You are right. You don’t need to know about __________. At this point the entire class inhales a short breath of disbelief. They are all thinking the same thing: Did he just say we don’t need to know this? Then I add, You don’t need to know about the phenomena that creates eclipses, for example, to live a happy life. You will get along fine in life without ever having to explain the system that creates eclipses. But what you do need to know is . . . how to problem solve . . . how to reason . . . how to support your claims with evidence . . . how to communicate orally and in writing to show you’re thinking clearly! These are the qualities one needs to be successful.

So then, you may wonder: Why do I need to know about church history? Most people I meet have little knowledge of the names, places, dates, and events regarding church history. They seem to be happy not thinking about the subject. I am going to answer your question like I would my students: You don’t need to know names, places, dates, and events in church history to live a happy, fulfilled Christian life. But God calls all believers to remember His intimate involvement in history from Bible times to present day. ‘To remember’ is a theme that is mentioned throughout the Bible. The Passover and the Lord’s Supper are two historical events the people of God were commanded to remember. These great events demonstrate that God is intimately involved with mankind and that this faith is rooted in history. Examine God’s commands in Exod 12:14 and Luke 22:19. John, Peter and Paul also encourage believers to remember (John 14:26; 2 Pet 3:1–2; 1 Cor 4:17; 2 Tim 2:14; 1 Cor 11:1–
