About this ebook
Nothing in all the vast, created universe could prepare us for God coming down as a helpless infant, or for Jesus the son of God intentionally positioning himself as a mere servant, identifying with the lowest of lows. It's enough to confound the mind, to make the heart contrite. This Advent, God’s great surprise changes everything.
Four weeks of devotions for use during Advent and leading up to Christmas, based on the down-to-earth, missional messages of the book and videos. Each devotion includes Scripture, story, and prayer.

CRANK
Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind.
(Philippians 2:1-2)
As we step into this Advent journey together, the question that Paul asks his followers in Philippi—and, by extension, you and me—is this: Has following Jesus made any real difference in your life?
Several years ago I worked for ODOT, the Ohio Department of Transportation. I was a flagger, one of those people who hold up road signs. It didn’t pay much, but it got me through the gaps when I was in seminary. On the final day of working for ODOT, I was given trash pickup duty, which meant I had an official excuse to drive the entire county for the day and look for trash and dead animals along the road. We never worked alone, and so I was given a partner for the day. His name was Crank.
Crank was kind of a crazy kid, didn’t talk much, and seemed to smoke a lot of pot, but I enjoyed his company. As we were traveling through the county we drove near the church where I was serving and I said to Crank, Hey that’s my church!
Crank looked at me, looked at the church, and said, Your church?
That’s right,
I said. I’m the pastor of that church.
It was part of my seminary responsibilities.
Crank was real quiet. Then, without trying to hurt my feelings, he said, Pastor? I didn’t even know you were a Christian.
Ouch! I had spent months with Crank, and yet he had no idea I was following Jesus, let alone leading a whole flock of people in following
