Introduction to Punjabi Script and Pronunciation
Punjabi is an Indo-Aryan language spoken by more than 100 million people worldwide. It is the official language of Punjab, a state in northern India, and is also widely spoken in Pakistan, Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States. As with any language, the script and pronunciation are fundamental to effective communication in Punjabi. In this chapter, we will delve into the basics of Punjabi script and pronunciation, exploring the unique features and characteristics of the language.
Punjabi Script
The Punjabi script is a writing system used to write the Punjabi language. It is an abugida, which means that each consonant has an inherent vowel sound, but this vowel can be modified or suppressed with diacritical marks. The Punjabi script is used to write Punjabi in both India and Pakistan, and is also used to write other languages such as Sindhi and Saraiki.
The Punjabi script consists of 35 consonants and 10 vowels. The consonants are arranged in a grid called the Gurmukhi script, which literally means from the mouth of the Guru.
The grid has three rows of consonants, with each row representing a different type of consonant sound. The first row contains voiceless consonants, the second row contains voiced consonants, and the third row contains nasal consonants.
Each consonant is written with a horizontal line called the matra, which is used to indicate the vowel sound associated with the consonant. The matra can be positioned above, below, or to the right of the consonant, depending on the vowel sound. In addition to the matra, there are other diacritical marks used to indicate vowel length, tone, and other features.
The Punjabi script is a complex writing system, and learning it can be challenging for beginners. However, with practice and dedication, anyone can become proficient in reading and writing Punjabi. Here are some tips and techniques for learning the Punjabi script:
