About this ebook
Architect Roy Mackie's life is turned upside down when his twin brother Raymond passes away. As he tries to come to terms with his loss, his well-ordered life begins to come unraveled. A rare bottle of wine is found empty and discarded, and Roy doesn't remember drinking it. Personal items are found rooms away from where he's sure--almost sure--he left them. When Roy's son begins to question his father's sanity, Roy turns to the only person who can help: Ann Kinnear.
What Ann learns is not what she or Roy expected, and they join forces with a pair of charitable benefactors to defend Roy against the forces conspiring against him.
Angels, and ministers of grace, defend us!
Be thou a spirit of health, or goblin damn'd.
Bring with thee airs from heaven, or blasts from hell.
Be thy intents wicked or charitable.
Thou com'st in such a questionable shape,
That I will speak to thee.
— William Shakespeare, "Hamlet"

MINISTERS OF GRACE
Ann Kinnear clicked off KYW news radio as her brother, Mike, eased up on the car’s brake and the Audi rolled forward another few feet. Ann would have expected a backup on the Schuylkill Expressway during rush hour due to volume, but the traffic report confirmed that a crash a few miles ahead had caused the mid-afternoon jam.
At least our exit is coming up,
she said. The client lives in Gladwyne?
Right next door—in Penn Valley. Roy Mackie. Ever heard of him?
Nope.
You would have if you were into architecture. He and his brother designed several well-known mid-century houses in the Philly area.
Mid-century houses? How old is he?
According to Wikipedia, eighty-three. But I wouldn’t have guessed that based on my conversation with him. He seems pretty sharp.
As the business manager of Ann Kinnear Sensing, Mike was responsible for vetting prospective clients.
Are we meeting him at his house?
No. He asked to meet us at the Gladwyne Country Club.
They got off at the Plymouth Meeting-Conshohocken exit, the scraggly trees and shrubs lining the Expressway giving way to well-groomed landscaping as the neighborhoods became posher until they reached the manicured fairways of a golf course. Mike negotiated the country club’s circular drive and parked, then they walked back to the clubhouse. Next to the entrance, a few jonquils and crocuses braved the chilly March temperature.
Inside, taupe walls over brilliantly white wainscoting displayed individually lit botanical prints. A chandelier hung from the coffered ceiling. They were trying to decide which of several hallways to explore when a young man appeared, his shirt’s breast
