    John Baptist Bohy

    John Baptist Bohy was born in Brussels, Belgium on August 8th of 1850. He immigrated to the United States about 1889, at the age of 39. This is according to a letter from Olive Meisel and the fact that Olives mother, Helen A. Bohy, daughter of John, was born in Hawk Run, Pennsylvania, on the 15th of August in 1889.

    For anyone to leave their homeland there must be compelling reasons. To find the reasons why John left Belgium it is important to look back at Belgian history, the history that was taking place during the 39 years that he lived there.

    History tells us that under the Dutch King, William the 1st of the Netherlands, the Belgian people increasingly resented measures that discriminated against them in favor of the Dutch since the lands at the time were combined and one country. The resentment was especially true in the areas of language and religion. A rebellion broke out in Brussels in 1830, and Belgian independence was declared. The Belgian independence was approved by the European powers at the London Conference of 1830-1. In 1831, Prince Leopold of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha was chosen king of the Belgians and became Leopold the 1st.
