    Lithuanian Family Farm

    According to family legend the Dobruszkis (Dubrish) Family owned a farm not far from the capital city of Vilnius, Lithuania. As a small child this author remembers that Grandma Dubrish seemed to use several versions of the last name when talking to her son Victor during our family visits to her home in Detroit. As I recall she may have used the name Dabeikiai. This means the entire family, or clan, and not a specific household. If so, the family may have come from the Utenos District. This is mentioned in the event someone in the future returns to Lithuania for further research, or more information becomes available to the arm chair researcher.

    During the early years of the 20th century the Lithuanian people were among many who were looking for freedom from the Tsarist rule of Nicholas II (1894-1917). Therefore, it is important to learn the compelling history where the two brothers; Martin and Theodore, left their homeland, their family, and lifelong friends to live out their remaining years in America. So, to follow is a brief history of Lithuania, and the compelling events that were taking place at the turn of the 20th century.

    The earliest known mention of the name Lithuania" is found in the German Teutonic chronicles of 1009. Lithuania grew and emerged as a larger Germanic state in the middle of the 13th century. The country on the whole did not adopt Christianity until 1387,
