Felicity Dwyer, Learning and Development Specialist

I’ll own up to being a bit sceptical about using Peas as the basis for a book on public speaking. I thought it might be too contrived but the result is a refreshingly different approach to a popular topic.

    Glenda Shawley, MD Fabulous Networking

This was a very good read which I feel covered all the bases. I really like Reg’s Podcasts as they do bring it all together. The conclusion was spot on and I plan to go through it again in more detail.

Ayman Kamel, Father of the Bridegroom Speech

Graham’s easy to use dictionary of P’s is an expert’s guide to getting your speech just right. Every P gives you an insight into how to give the best presentation. My favourite is Panache!

    Introduction

The ‘Peas’ of Public Speaking® – A Dictionary of the Skills and Techniques of Public Speaking

(Trainers, Teachers and Presenters - also those aspiring to become so).

A unique approach to an appreciation of the skills and techniques of Public Speaking that you will remember and apply forever, using ‘Peas’.

Peas? What have Garden Peas got to do with Public Speaking?

    Read on for the answer.

No, this Pea Pod of a Book is not a Joke. It is, however, a light-hearted approach to the serious business of communicating with others in any Public environment, when and where information is being shared. This includes, for example, a Classroom, Training Room, Seminar, Conference, Business Meeting and other similar locations. It can also include Virtual Communication, Webinars and situations when the Participants cannot see or Physically be with each other. And yes, it can include reading out loud.

The history behind the connection with Peas

The fascination for ‘Peas’ with respect to Public Speaking started quite a while back. Having been interested in, and delivering, Presentation Skills training for several years, I became attracted to an ‘Advanced Presentation Skills Course’ which featured ‘The Five P’s of Presentation Skills’. Being equally interested in finding out how ‘other People do it’ as well as for my own Personal Professional development, this was an opportunity I could not miss. It was a short, two-day course yet the Professional level of the course and the shared Five P’s associated with the skills and techniques of Presentation Skills, were just the start. A few years later, my initial fifteen ‘Peas’ (note the different description being adopted) were extrapolated into an enlarged selection of essential tips for successful Public Speaking and featured in my first book, ‘How to Make a Confident and Memorable Wedding Speech - The Peas of Public Speaking’. This dictionary that you are reading now, is an extension of those fifteen ‘Peas’.

This book then, includes the original fifteen Peas, and has been extended to include a staggering number of additional Peas. Each is accompanied by a short definition outlining how that ‘Pea’ applies to the skills and techniques required for Presenting or Public Speaking. There is some cross reference between words within this dictionary where some have similar meaning. This is an advantage, however, as the duplication will assist your reinforcement, review and enhancement of the meaning of the other (similar) ‘Peas’.

    Who is the book for?

Unlike my earlier book, this dictionary will appeal to quite a wide audience - Professionals and novices alike. It applies to all who wish to speak confidently and memorably in Public which includes those already speaking Publicly such as Trainers, Teachers, Presenters and Public Speakers. It will also be beneficial to those in training for a Public Speaking role as well as aspiring others. The ‘Pea’ Prompts will addtionally Prove to be useful for those Preparing for an interview of any kind, e.g. job, Promotion, Place at University, new school. The ‘Who?’ also includes
