    Why was I asked to speak?

    If you don’t know, find out why they asked you in particular. Are you a recognized expert on this subject? Did someone recommend you? Is the topic related to your job responsibility? What do they know about you?

    What topic will I speak on?

    Find out exactly what the group wants you to address. This will help you define your purpose and message. You can tell them what you want to say in addition to what they want to hear about, but don’t stray too far from their request.

    When’s the speech going to occur?

    Obviously, you need to know the date and time. Think about your presentation in the time context. If you’ll be speaking after a meal or late in the day, you’ll need to be particularly dynamic to keep the audience attentive and focused.

    How long should my speech be?

    Always know how long you are expected to speak and honor that time limit. Find out if that time includes a Question and Answer (Q&A) session or if additional time is allotted for that. If you speak too long, you’ll irritate the program planner, the audience and any subsequent
