About this ebook

Africa has a rich history of successful, inspirational women. It is important to realise that one of colonialism's long-term effects was to reduce women's place in society. We must remember the honour and respect that women had in ancient Africa. We must also, in the present day, acknowledge the vital role that women played in the liberation struggles of many African countries, even if their stories have not previously been widely told or celebrated. The modern African women are empowered to dream and to go out into the world and achieve greatness in whatever field and profession they choose to pursue. These are the stories of 21 such women.

21 WOMEN IN THE HEALING AFRICA

Africa has a rich history of successful, inspirational women. It is important to realise that one of colonialism's long-term effects was to reduce women’s place in society. We must remember the honour and respect that women had in ancient Africa. We must also, in the present day, acknowledge the vital role that women played in the liberation struggles of many African countries, even if their stories have not previously been widely told or celebrated.

Many Liberation movements and political parties began in the colonial period as resistance measures. Women were often given small, seemingly insignificant roles, but their roles often made the biggest impact. Both educated and uneducated women were important to these movements and showed a lot of leadership potential. The contributions of women are often overlooked in history telling, which unfortunately is not unique to Africa. People have tried to rewrite history to give a fuller, more nuanced picture of what happened, but this is hampered by the fact that stories have been told from a male perspective.

At the point in history that is covered in this book, Africa was tired and wounded. The people had fought and finally won back independence. They had their land returned but their spirits were wounded. Africa needed to heal and rediscover who she is. The years after independence have been years of healing and rediscovery. Years of learning how to live together within the new nation-state borders that the colonialists had drawn. Nations, or tribes as they were now known, were forced to live together within the same borders, find common ground and lead a functioning society despite the vastly different cultures, languages, and religions each had. Africans didn’t, and still don’t, always get it right but as we heal and as embrace each other as Africans, we will get better. We are stronger together.
