It tells their stories simply, in 100 or less words, noting their claim to fame and origins. It also has beautiful illustrations by a 10-year-old artist, whose desire is not only to share her artwork with the world but to share these women's stories too. - African Queens: WOMEN OF AFRICA, #1
1
Welcome, to our book on ancient African queens! We are thrilled to take you on a journey through the vibrant and diverse history of ancient Africa. Our goal is to discover a confident and self-aware Africa with diverse cultures, languages, religions, and occupations. In these societies, each person knew their role and played it with confidence! It's worth noting that in ancient Africa, men and women were considered equal, though they had different roles to play. Women were able to lead and were respected for their capabilities just as much as men. Many African cultures believed in women's innate power. In this book, we will tell the inspiring stories of amazing queens and warriors who led armies, built cities, took over lands, and ran prosperous countries. Their stories are remarkable and will be told for generations. Our hope is that young African girls will read their stories and feel inspired to strive for greatness in their own lives, leaving stories for their children's children.
- Stronger Together: WOMEN OF AFRICA, #2
2
Let's explore some of the fascinating cultures of Africa together. For centuries Africans have had an open and welcoming attitude towards strangers, welcoming foreigners into their land and communities. When Europeans and Asians arrived in pre-colonial Africa, African leaders soon realised that these visitors had strong economic and dominance motives, leading to defensive measures being undertaken. In this book we explore the lives of some women in pre-colonial Africa who played vital roles in early African politics; some against the colonialists while others against other African nations.
- Courageous and Daring: WOMEN OF AFRICA, #3
3
This book highlights some of women's resistance in colonial Africa. It tells the stories of different women across the continent who found themselves living during colonialism in a wounded Africa. They rose and fought for the freedom of their people and the continent. Europeans started colonising Africa in the mid-1800s and continued doing so for decades. The colonisers, unfortunately, didn't recognise the important role African women played in their societies. They attempted to impose their own gender roles on these complex societies. This disrupted the existing roles women held in society and contributed to their resistance against colonial rule. African women were involved in various parts of society, such as agriculture, the market, and the home. Some resisted the unfamiliar economic and political policies and their prescribed social space by engaging in various forms of resistance across different regions of Africa.
- Herstory: WOMEN OF AFRICA, #4
4
Africa has a rich history of successful, inspirational women. It is important to realise that one of colonialism's long-term effects was to reduce women's place in society. We must remember the honour and respect that women had in ancient Africa. We must also, in the present day, acknowledge the vital role that women played in the liberation struggles of many African countries, even if their stories have not previously been widely told or celebrated. The modern African women are empowered to dream and to go out into the world and achieve greatness in whatever field and profession they choose to pursue. These are the stories of 21 such women.
