AFRICA
Welcome, to our book on ancient African queens! We are thrilled to take you on a journey through the vibrant and diverse history of ancient Africa. Our goal is to discover a confident and self-aware Africa with diverse cultures, languages, religions, and occupations. In these societies, each person knew their role and played it with confidence!
It's worth noting that in ancient Africa, men and women were considered equal, though they had different roles to play. Women were able to lead and were respected for their capabilities just as much as men. Many African cultures believed in women’s innate power. Some believed that women had the power but gave authority to men. This was because women were the ones who gave birth, nursed, and raised the child. As a result, Queen mothers played a significant role in the King's life and leadership.
It was not uncommon for women to take up leadership roles, especially in times where there was no man to step into leadership. Many of these societies were matrilineal, which means that the next leader, whether King or Queen, had to come from the maternal line, unlike patrilineal cultures from around the world.
In this book, we will tell the inspiring stories of amazing queens and warriors who led armies, built cities, took over lands, and ran prosperous countries. Their stories are remarkable and will be told for generations. Our hope is that young African girls will read their stories and feel inspired to strive for greatness in their own lives, leaving stories for their children’s children.
Join us on this exciting journey as we explore the lives of these ancient African women, who dared to lead their people and left an indelible mark in history. Women like Amanirenas, Amina of Zazzau, Yennenga, Makeda (Queen of Sheba), Al-Kahina and many more. Let's celebrate these remarkable women, who deserve a place in our hearts and in the pages of history.
AHMOSE NEFERTARI
Diagram Description automatically generatedAhmose-Nefertari was a powerful queen and religious leader who lived during the 18th dynasty of ancient Egypt, around 1550-1530 BCE. She was the first consort of Pharaoh Ahmose I, who founded the 18th dynasty and reunited Egypt after the expulsion of the Hyksos invaders. Ahmose-Nefertari was also the mother of Pharaoh Amenhotep I, who succeeded his father as ruler of Egypt.
Ahmose-Nefertari was known for her religious piety and her role in promoting the cult of the god Amun, who was the patron deity of the 18th dynasty. She built the first temple to Amun at the city of Thebes, which became one of the most important religious sites in ancient Egypt. It was was known for its wealth and splendour. The temple was called Hwt-Amun, or the Mansion of Amun, and it was known for its wealth and splendour.
Ahmose-Nefertari was also a powerful political figure who wielded significant influence during her lifetime. She is believed to have played a key role in the establishment of the 18th dynasty and the reunification of Egypt. She also held titles such as King's Great Wife
and God's Wife of Amun
, which indicate her high status and political power.
In addition to her religious and political roles, Ahmose-Nefertari was also a patron of the arts. She commissioned many building projects, including the construction of her tomb in the Valley of the Queens. Her tomb, which was discovered in 1884 by French archaeologist Edouard Naville, contained many valuable artifacts and treasures, including beautiful statues and jewellery.
Despite her power and influence, Ahmose-Nefertari remains relatively unknown compared to other famous queens of ancient Egypt such as Cleopatra and Nefertiti. However, her role in the religious and political life of Egypt during the 18th dynasty cannot
