INTRODUCTION
I remember marching as a new teacher into my first assignment as a sixth-grade math teacher, full of enthusiasm and zeal. I was going to change the world, one student at a time! I was going to follow everything I had been taught. This would include not smiling until November, as the veteran teachers advised. I would be consistent with my rules, routines, and procedures. I would get every single last one of my sixth graders to fall in love with math by week two. Every parent, administrator, and other teacher would be amazed at the work I had done. Parents would move me to the top of their teacher Christmas list and send me thank you cards all the time, expressing their deep appreciation for what their child had learned in my class.
If you have taught for any length of time, you will be able to predict the outcome of my naïve, but well-intentioned goals. I failed miserably at the not-smiling thing, because smiling is my jam, and it was impossible to turn that off. I learned quickly that it was harder to be consistent with rules, routines, and procedures
