    FOREWORD

Well, saints of God, we are finally seeing a progressive masterpiece on servant hood for the 21st century. Dr. Reginald King has done a uncomplicated yet comprehensive work for adjutants and armor bearers. This work is a proven research of outstanding quality. One that was carefully studied and constructed with great biblical insight. We highly commend his work and recommend this material to not only adjutants but all leaders seeking truth for their leadership. This book will change the way you view servanthood as you experience the evolution of the adjutancy from a Bible Carrier to The Minister of Protocol.

    PREFACE

I have served as an Adjutant in some capacity for the last twenty-plus years. I found a job with no job description or guidelines for the assignment’s duties or responsibilities. Those performing the assignment had the heart but were unsure of precisely what to do or even why they were doing it. Adjutants and Armor Bearers had a title but no explicit knowledge of what that title meant or the responsibilities that accompanied this title. Ushers, hospitality, trustees, and even security all have some type of manual or book to gain knowledge or guidance, while nothing exists for the Adjutant. Unfortunately, this leaves Adjutants trying to create a description and function, making our assignment appear unorganized and chaotic.

My hope was to create a manual that would give some guidance and direction to those serving in this area of ministry. The manual is NOT the law of guidelines for the Adjutant but provides some insight into the why and how of our assignment. Because I had the opportunity to personally train with the founder of the Adjutancy and its first Adjutant General, I had the opportunity to gain some valuable insight that I will share with you.

The process that I used for writing this manual was Recall, Revelation, and Research. I have been honored to serve in several denominations and fellowships under various circumstances for various services. I have gathered all I have recalled and recorded it in this manual. Recall is the act of retrieving information or events from the past. To best benefit from the retrieval of information, individuals need to record the information for accuracy and future use. My former pastor always states if it’s not written, it did not happen. This was his way of saying you must note everything that occurs to have a record of it. I would always carry a pen and paper to ensure I understand what is being done, how, and most importantly, why. This process also helped me to know the procedure whenever the same type of service occurred, making me and those who served more efficient. Some of my writing is through revelation.

Revelation is a surprising and previously unknown fact, especially one that is made known in a dramatic way. It is also the divine or supernatural disclosure to humans of something relating to human existence or the world. Much of what I learned and developed was through God revealing His word in a way that made serving not only easier but more understandable. You will see in this manual the use of scripture to reference what we do and why. I hope that some of the revelations the Lord gave me will stir and encourage you to understand our assignment and also pencil some of your revelations! I want you to understand that this manual is simply a blueprint. A blueprint is nothing more than a detailed plan. And blueprints can be altered and modified to meet the user’s needs. So I give you permission to change the blueprint to meet the needs of your ministry. Finally, you cannot create a fact-based manual without research.

My secular job is as an educator. I am a business professor, and one of the requirements of my profession is that we stay current in our field by publishing which requires significant research. I utilize this skill throughout this manual by providing definitions, resources, and historical data to assist you in understanding all aspects of this assignment. I often tell my students that they can state their opinions about a subject matter, but facts must follow those opinions. Your opinions are built on the shoulders of fact; without facts, your opinions are unsubstantiated heads with no bodies.

The challenge in writing this manual was that although I attempted to make it factual and accurate, it was based on my denominational perspective. Many of the practices I describe might not be part of your organization or denomination practices. Again use this manual as a blueprint and not a code of law. While I am an Elder and Assistant Pastor, this manual was written from the perspective of a servant. I do not use my title in this book because a good Adjutant performs their assignment without needing a title to be respected. People will follow people who know what they don’t know and share that knowledge for their betterment. This manual is not about just teaching you what you don’t know but teaching you how to convey that information in a way that glorifies God and demonstrates respect to those around you.

I also chose to speak in the gender-neutral tense. The lasted static in 2018 demonstrated that twenty percent of U.S. pastors are women.¹ Another study noted that thirty-six percent of secondary clergy are women. With this rising data, it is essential that we embrace our sister Adjutants. I appreciate and value my fellow sister Adjutants and Armor Bearers, who serve side-by-side with me in ensuring the leader and ministry are served.

The primary function of this manual is to help the Adjutants and Armor Bearer identify who they are and what their function is in the body of Christ and their local assembly.

    CHAPTER ONE:

    What It Truly Means

    to Be an Armor Bearer

I recently read an article from a well-known pastor stating that the armor bearer is not a Biblical church office. The author adds that true pastors do not need security, service assistance, or drivers to aid them because they are not celebrities. And while I agree that some leaders have misused the office of the adjutant, I also believe that the assignment is necessary for assisting leadership. I will also add that there are multiple church offices that are not biblical, such as administrator, executive pastor, minister of music, trustee, and the list goes on. But we find in today’s society that these offices are not only necessary but vital to the growth and
