Sensation Me Crazy - Jane Elizabeth

    Introduction

It hurt. Watching you struggle hurt. My parents have done everything they could to help you, to ensure that you succeeded in life but with every passing year it only seemed to worsen. When a child is born with a disability, of any kind, it is scary and can cause parents to worry about the development of their child. My brother was born with RAD (Reactive Attachment Disorder), ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), and possibly undiagnosed SPD. What this means is that due to these disorders he has struggled to learn in a ‘normal’ environment and that he gets easily frustrated when something does not work. I have watched him become violent, shredding books, punching holes in the wall, and slamming doors when he becomes triggered. These reactive, violent outbursts are frightening and sometimes there isn’t much to be done until he cools down. While aggressive behavior is one factor of his development, the others are stealing, lying, manipulation, etc. Being a target of his behaviors has created an effect on me, as well as my mother; as we are his primary targets. However, it has also given me the experience needed to handle situations like this should I ever find myself in one later in life.

Learning about SPD and what parents can do to help their children is extremely important as it will not only benefit the child’s later development, but also the parent’s mental well-being. Seeing how much my mother struggles with my brother and the constant fighting between them, creates tension throughout the whole family. She has done everything she can to help him, and has spent countless dollars on him so that he gets the right education, the proper environment, anything; yet, he still behaves the same way. He’s now twenty years old and still, his behavior is that of a 15-year-old. Perhaps this could be a result of the disorders, or it could be something else, but I know that he can change; he simply chooses not to. Not every child with SPD will behave as such, it depends on their primary years of life as this is the foundation for their development and growth. Being loved from conception is key. That is the most important factor in a child’s development. Without that initial love, we find children like my brother, who are severely affected and will struggle with these disorders for the rest of their lives. Love, attention, proper care, tools, and safe environments are topics that will be discussed within this book, as well as how to manage this disorder in order to keep it from increasing. Should your child be born with SPD, do not be frightened by it, they are still a normal child; they simply learn differently, and may need extra help from time to time.

    Chapter 1: What Is SPD

For many parents, when they are told by doctors or later on by teachers, that their child may have learning disabilities they tend to think of Autism. That their child is going to have issues learning, problem-solving, reading social cues, etc. While that may be the case for certain disabilities, not every child with one will demonstrate these symptoms. SPD is one of the more common disabilities as it tends to appear in children who have ADHD or ADD. For those who do not know ADHD stands for: Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder and ADD is: Attention Deficit Disorder. These disorders are common in many children and do not create too
