About this ebook

There is no pain like losing a child. That is something Blaze knows all too well. It explains why instead of celebrating the first birthday, she's sitting in a cemetery with balloons holding her grief when she wants nothing more than to be holding her son.

She should share her grief with her husband, Dominic. But that's hard to do when deep down, she can't help but think he had something to do with their son's death in the first place. The only comfort she can find is in a ghost buried near her sweet boy.

The more Blaze and Dominic's marriage dissolves, the harder her gut tells her something isn't right. One trip to a pawn shop with a piece of jewelry he gave her and her entire life as she knew it unravels. Dominic is anything but what he seems, and those gifts aren't gifts at all…

They're trophies.

Lucas has to crossover. That doesn't stop him from watching over Blaze and guarding her against a monster she doesn't know is right on her doorstep.

But when her husband comes for her life, Lucas won't even let the supernatural veil separating them stop him from making sure Blaze remains unharmed.

And acts of love like that certainly have the power to defy even fate.

Her Ghostly Savior - Prometheus Susan

    Chapter 1

Blaze wasn't sure when her life had taken a turn towards hell. Had it been when she met Dominic? Was it when they said their vows? She did not have the answers, except since marrying Dominic, her life was not what she imagined it would be. Growing up, she had grand dreams of what her life would be like when she was in love, married to the one she loved. Little did that little girl know, monsters walked in the form of an average man.

Dominic wasn't a monster when she married him. Or so she thought. He could have been hiding it for all she knew. While they were dating, he was caring, courteous, sweet, and romantic. He held open doors for her, waited until she was seated to sit, brought her flowers, listened when she talked, and asked her opinion. He was different from any man she dated before.

Maybe that was the connection. Dominic reminded her of her dad. Her parents had this loving relationship where each had a voice. Dad treated Mom like a queen while Mom treated Dad like a king. That was what she was looking for in her marriage—the give and take between partners. Not one was better than the other.

When they had been dating, it had been that way. Blaze could look back and see the subtle changes that were taking place. Why she hadn't seen them then was anyone's guess. Blinded by love, biased in thinking it was not happening, or refusing that she had made a mistake. She thought it was a combination of all the above.

It had not been a big wedding. She and Dominic agreed that a small, intimate ceremony and reception was better suited for the two of them. Blaze thought back, and she did not speak to any of her invited friends. She was unsure when that happened. Those women had been her best friends.

It had been at her son's funeral that she found the reason why. Her friends had been reaching out to her, but when she didn't respond, they stopped. Each was saying the same thing. I tried to call you to set up a lunch date or a girl's night out. My calls went straight to voicemail. Mine were the same way. She texted them with no response. Calls went to voicemail. Blaze heard the same thing. I never received a call or text from you. It's like you fell off the face of the earth. I was worried something happened to you.

They figured out the problem with a few texts and calls back and forth while standing together. Their numbers had been blocked and placed on a do not disturb list. Blaze knew she had not done this to her friends and family. She missed seeing and hearing from them. Why both? She had her suspicions.

She knew it was Dominic. There was no other explanation. Blaze knew she had not blocked her friends. The other question was, when had he done it? She changed her password to unlock the phone, going as far as to change her passwords across the board. She wasn't sure what else she had been missing.

Blaze was thankful that those close to her had not given up. How it had happened, she did not know. Since she married Dominic, he took over her entire life. He would get pissy if she spent time with anyone else. Friends and family saw the obituary and ca    me to pay their respects. If it had not been for them looking past the fact, they had not heard from her in months upon months, there would have been not a soul at Billy's funeral.

It was a stark reality at who she could count on and who she couldn't. Her husband was not who she thought he was. He chose a meeting at work over supporting her in her grief. Blaze didn't expect him to be grief-stricken over losing their son. But he could have been there. She still didn't understand how a father could turn a blind eye to their child. Dominic acted as though Billy never existed.

She paid for the funeral out of her savings. Dominic did not see why they needed to spend money on a funeral for a baby, one he had not wanted. Forced into the situation, this child's responsibilities fell to her. Blaze felt guilty. Billy was better off where he was than growing up in a home where the father resented him. What she hoped would happen had not. Her little boy deserved a better life than she could have given him. Blaze loved her little boy with all that she was, thought she was protecting him, but it was not enough.

    Chapter 2

He never wanted that bratty kid. Children were not a part of his grand plan. Dominic had a fail-safe method. It had been working for him for most of his life. Ever since he was a teenager. That was when he got his first taste of what it felt like to take another's life. The rush of knowing his actions caused the demise of another.

His first time had been by accident. It was the night of his senior prom. His date had been one of the quiet girls he saw in the library. The quiet ones were usually the freakiest. All too eager to be going to the prom, Dominic knew he was guaranteed a sex-filled after party. It was what happened after the dance that awakened his dark side.

He wanted a little something before they went to dinner. Dominic's date had been more than eager to suck his cock in the restaurant's parking lot. It had not taken much persuasion. Telling her how beautiful, special she was to him, how he had been watching her the past few months, waiting for the right time to ask her out. He found his release. She may have been quiet, but damn, that mouth; the girl had talents.

It had been as he got out of the car that she complained of not feeling well. He shrugged it off. She swallowed every drop of his release. That was on her if it upset her stomach, not him. Dominic noticed she started to shake and sweat. Her breathing became labored as her legs gave out from under her.

What he remembered the most was her begging for him to help her. Please, Dominic, I need my glucose tablets. Please, help me. Dominic, please. Never had he imagined what low blood sugar could do to a body. It had been a rush to watch her suffer, like nothing he had ever experienced before. He rummaged through her purse. Instead of taking out what she was asking for, he found the syringe filled with insulin. His curiosity got the best of him as he jabbed her with the needle.

What happened next was better than any orgasm he ever had. The look of shock on her face was something he always remembered. That knowing look of I'm going to die. Dominic enjoyed her struggle to take those last breaths as her body shut down. The way her body convulsed was fascinating to him.

He was thankful he had the smarts to park in a deserted spot of the parking lot. No one interrupted his first kill. Dominic waited for her to take that last breath before he called for help. Unbelievably the easiest thing he had ever done. He was astounded at how easy it had been to kill her. Wiping off the insulin pen, he placed it with the dumped-out contents of her purse.

Dominic played the frantic boyfriend when the paramedics arrived and answered all the police’s questions. He explained how shocked he had been, fumbling for what she asked for, by the time he had found the tablets, she was unconscious, and how he had been afraid she would choke. Everyone bought his act.

Over the years, he learned to be gone by the time police arrived. The fewer times his name appeared on a police report, the better. No paper trail to link him back to his victims. Dominic enjoyed knowing the women he chose would die by his hand. It was a high he couldn't achieve anywhere else. He had gotten to where he could go a few months before needing that calming, pleasure-filled fix that murdering a woman brought about.

    Chapter 3

She found a sense of serenity every time she visited her son's grave. It became a weekly trip these past few months. Lately, though, her visits were becoming more frequent. Some days she came during her lunch hour or stopped after work. She couldn't explain the reasons why. All she knew was how she felt when she was sitting on that stone bench under the big oak tree.

At first, it had been a way for her to stay connected to her beloved little boy. Blaze blamed her husband for his death. Even blaming herself for taking a role in his death. If she left Dominic when the trouble had started, not left their son alone with him, or left after Billy had been born. But she hadn't. Nothing about that fateful day made any sense. Even now, months later, she had unanswered questions. She remembered it vividly.

It was the first time her husband had taken care of Billy. She knew some men were skittish around newborns. Dominic had been more than that. He wanted nothing to do with their son. Went as far as to request a DNA test before paying for diapers. Cutting her out of their joint checking account because he believed she cheated, Billy being the result of her infidelity.

Blaze was dumbstruck with his thinking. No matter how often she vowed that she had been faithful, her words fell on deaf ears. First, it was the demand that she get rid of the Bastard, then it became where she moved into the spare bedroom. Dominic and her barely speaking. A few times, she thought he put something in her drink. The stomach cramps scared her to the point she got medical treatment, afraid she was losing the baby. Doctors chalked it up to a virus.

She thought once the test came back that Billy was his son, things would change. It had to at some point; she was no longer the cheating jezebel. Not once had he apologized for how he treated her or for being wrong in his accusations. Dominic expected her to forget, move back into their bedroom, resume having sex with him. Blaze was not in love with her husband after all that transpired. He killed whatever desire she once had for him.

Billy made up for his father's shortcomings. His little smile could chase away the darkest moods. Blaze remembered him being the best baby. He hadn't fussed unless his diaper needed to be changed or he was hungry. Cradled in her arms, he would sleep all night long. She often sang to him as she rocked her little boy. It was him and her against the world.

Blaze reached into her purse for the pack of tissues. Today would have been Billy's first birthday. She stopped and bought a couple balloons, cupcakes, and candles to decorate his headstone. Her little boy may not be here, but she was going to celebrate his birthday. It was a habit she had gotten into. Each time she visited her son, she brought a gift to leave by his grave.

Wiping away her tears, blowing her nose, she should have seen the warning signs that day. Blaze had hoped Dominic accepted Billy, seeing that he was his son. He had been back to his old self that day. Treating her as if he loved and cherished her. Acting like he wanted them to be a family. She hadn't given the spa appointment a second thought. Dominic surprised her while they had been dating with special days such as this.

Was she that stupid to have thought what he said was true? Blaze knew that answer. Yes, she was. She had been praying Dominic would change, accept Billy, that they could be the family she always dreamed of. They could mend their broken marriage. She could find the love she once felt for her husband. That day it seemed as though her prayers had been answered.

    Chapter 4

She had been wrong. Her joyous day turned into a dark nightmare when she returned home. Dominic had not bothered to call her. According to him, I didn't want to disturb your special day. Blaze turned around and walked out the door. She couldn't bring herself to yell at her husband. Shocked, stunned, and broken-hearted, she went to the nearest hotel.

He hadn't called or texted her. When she returned home, Billy's bedroom was bare, a fresh coat of paint drying on the walls. Blaze was beyond stunned. She stayed at the hotel for two days. It would
