Prologue
Let me give you a breakdown of my family’s devastation.
My name is Thelma Western. I am a nurse who is seeking an MD. I have five adult kids, three of whom I haven’t heard from in years. Two are still at home—although, we hardly talk, and I can’t understand why there is such silence around the house. I also have a grandson named Zaydis Western, who is graduating from high school in a couple of months.
I am married to a man named Leroy Western who I thought was my love for over thirty-five years, but it turned out to be a hoax of a marriage. Lord, why, why, why?
This family hates me, each in their own way; for what their father did to them while growing up. They are causing me to be in distress and I don’t know if my heart can take it anymore. Oh Lord, help me; I can’t deal.
Two Weeks After
Dr. Penelope comes in and opens the blinds, saying hello to me and my roommate, Mrs. Connie Johnson, a Black female in her late 50's. Mrs. Johnson didn't like that the blinds were opened. We haven't seen the light in a while for having been in a coma.
Mrs. Western, my name is Dr. Penelope, but they call me Dr. P. May I ask how you are feeling right now? According to my records, you are a survivor … And Mrs. Johnson, how are you feeling this morning?
Mrs. Western, I will be your doctor until we release you, okay? Looking at your record, you are a very strong lady and are pulling through just fine. You will be here for a couple more weeks; not quite there yet but improving. You have been in here for two weeks; do you remember how you ended up in here?
What time is it?
It’s 10:30 a.m,
Dr. P. said.
I started crying, Yes, ma'am. My ex-husband hit me in the head with a metal pole that goes to the fence, and … um … kicked me on my side like I owe him something in life.
Yes, ma'am, you’re so right,
