About this ebook

In life, there are things common to man and things that are not common. However, adversity is common to every man. However, adversity s common in every man. Nonetheless, a given adversity encountered does not determine your defeat. What determines whether a person is defeated or not is how they respond.

To summarize, the book My Battle, His Victory: Fighting a Battle against All Odds and Winning is a display and an observation of the practical application of biblical principles when responding to the adversities of life. These God-given principles, proven and time-tested, are designed to lead to victory for the believer, internally and externally, in every situation.

    About the Author

    Acknowledgments

There are many people to acknowledge and thank for their support. However, rather than attempt to recall everyone then inadvertently overlook to mention someone, I will limit thanks to my family and to those who have provided support in the completion of this book.

When I was diagnosed with kidney failure, my first thought was to call my parents. As I recall, after sharing with my parents my kidney failure diagnosis, they encouraged me over the phone and expressed their prayers, love, and support. At this point, it was a very long road to recovery.

To my parents: Ivan C. Pierce Jr., father (deceased); and Odie Mae Pierce, mother. Thank you for raising me in a loving Christian home, nurturing an environment that fostered the necessary attributes, resulting in a healthy, wholesome and well-rounded upbringing. Not only did this result in me being the person that I am today, but this gave me the foundation, as a reference point, to apply in raising my children; your grandchildren.

To my siblings: Anthony (deceased), Ivan, and Esther. I am grateful and thankful to God for choosing you three to be my siblings in this life.

To my wife, Deirdre, and children, Marsalis and Starla. Deirdre, you are a dream come true, and I thank God for blessing me to cross paths with you over thirty years ago. Thank you for your love, prayers, encouragement, and support. Marsalis and Starla, I thank our heavenly Father God for privileging me with the responsibility and task of raising you both in His ways. You two are a blessing, and it is a joy to see you both blossom into amazing people.

In reference to the remainder of acknowledgments, it will be associated with individuals who have contributed to the development of this book. During a visit with my client, Edna H., after resolving her health plan issue, I mentioned to her my book plans. After informing her of my indecisiveness regarding book titles, she suggested the title of this book after sharing her my story. Thank you, Miss Edna! Nate B., a friend and mentor, who is a business consultant and coach, suggested the book's subtitle. Thank you, Nate!

In reference to the publishing team at Christian Faith Publishers, thank you for all your hard work and support and for partnering with me in this endeavor to bring this book into fruition. Lastly, this is to thank my mother, Odie Mae Pierce, for suggesting to me to contact Christian Faith Publishers—my mother's intuition is golden!

    Introduction

The purpose of this book is to encourage, inspire, and share with others what God has done for me, He will do for them—if you believe, trust, and take Him at His word. This is walking by faith, not by sight (2 Corinthians 5:7).

After Noah completed the ark, God caused it to rain on the earth for forty days and forty nights (Genesis 6:8–8:20).

The children of Israel were in the wilderness for forty years before a new generation, led by Joshua, was allowed to possess the Promised Land (Joshua 1–21).

When Moses was instructed by God to go up to Mt. Sinai to receive the Ten Commandments to teach the children of Israel, he was on the mountain with the Lord forty days and forty nights (Exodus 24:9–18).

Elijah walked forty days and forty nights before he reached Mt. Horeb; he fasted forty days before he began his public ministry (1 Kings 19: 1–21).

The spirit of God led Jesus into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil for forty days (St. Matthew 4:1–11).

There are forty days between the Resurrection of Jesus and His Ascension (Acts 1:1–3).

The number 40 is mentioned 146 times in the Bible.

I had kidney failure for forty months.

    What am I saying?

There is biblical or spiritual significance associated with the number 40.

From a symbolism standpoint, according to the Bible, it is the number of waiting, the preparation, the test or the punishment. Also, it symbolizes the death of oneself and the spiritual rebirth.

While all the briefly referenced, previous events reflect adversity, the outcome for each event produced a godly result, designed to not only reflect a favorable outcome for those involved, but each favorable result reflected Almighty God receiving all the glory, honor, and praise from those who received the manifested promise.

The goal of this book, through sharing my story, is to convey the love of God. There are so many great things one can experience in life. However, life is analogous to an open book exam given in school. Whether it was elementary, junior high, high school or college, in order to pass, it was necessary to reference the right source of facts (truth) to appropriate the right answers in order to achieve a passing grade.

    In like manner, because
