About this ebook

The tongue is the pen of our thoughts, our will, and emotions""the center of who we are. The tongue is such a small member of our body, yet it has the authority of giving us life or death. It has the strength of steering us in many directions, and it has the might and force of keeping us in bondage or freedom. Could the address of our future lie in the pen of our heart? Our tongue has the capability of ultimately revealing and defining who we really are. Who are you?

    Author’s Note

Being the author of a book was not on my agenda until one Sunday morning while on my way to church the Lord revealed to me that I was to write a book on the tongue and the words that come out of our mouth. I considered myself a very unlikely candidate for this task since there were times I had problems with my own tongue. Nevertheless, I wanted to be obedient.

I’m thankful that the Lord does not see us the way we see ourselves, and that His Truth remains.

For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways (Isa.55:8).

    Not Thinking Still Speaking

In the multitude of words there wanteth not sin; but he that refraineth his lips is wise.

    — Prov 10:19 (KJV)

How many times have our mouths gotten us into trouble? We carelessly voice a few idle words. The words just seem to hit our brain and roll out of our mouth. We might say something harsh that hurts someone, or we may just be speaking idle words in jest. In either situation, it is almost certain that most people are simply not aware of the power and effectiveness of the words they speak.

Many times we will just start talking, saying words and phrases that would be better left unsaid. I know that I have been guilty of not thinking before I speak. I have spoken words that have hurt people, and I am sure I have even angered a few people with the words spoken from my mouth!

This type of thing does happen and will happen when we don’t take the time to think about what we are saying.

He that shutteth his lips is esteemed a man of understanding (Prov. 17:28, KJV).

I am sure that I am not alone in the area of not thinking before speaking. I believe if we would be honest, most of us would in all likelihood say we have been guilty of letting our tongue steer us in a direction that later on we realized we would have preferred not to go!

    One Subject, Many Situations

Trust in the Lord with all thine heart, and lean not unto thine own understanding.

In all thy ways acknowledge him and he shall direct thy path.

    —Proverbs 3:5–6, KJV

Iam writing on the subject of the tongue and the words that come out of our mouth because this topic should be counted of great importance. It should be important because our tongue and mouth have an ability that no other part of our body has. The tongue has the power of producing life or death.

I know, of course, this is not a new teaching. There have been many books written concerning our tongue and the words we speak. Numerous preachers and teachers of the Word have tried many ways to get us to realize that we can have what we say. I believe we are obviously having what we say, that is why most of us are sick, unhappy, and bankrupt.

I believe there is at least one explanation for this. We are simply not giving enough thought to the words we are speaking. We look at our circumstances, then we let our circumstances dictate the words that come out of our mouth.

For instance, in one of my own experiences, I had just bought a new car; and as in the case of most new car owners, I was very pleased with my purchase. While I was out driving one day, the engine of the car suddenly died. For no apparent reason to me, the car just totally quit running. Well, as you may have already guessed, I spent an unhappy hour or more stranded along the side of the road! I finally managed to get help, and the car was towed back to the dealership. Over a short period of time, I had to repeat this scenario several times.

I can tell you that during the span of this ordeal, my mouth was in rapid motion; and as I said before, I was saying words and phrases that would have been better left unsaid!

True to my own words, I did suffer a few headaches over that vehicle, not to mention a lot of frustration at being stranded on the side of the road waiting for the tow truck!

During this time, I didn’t realize my negative words were only adding to my frustration and robbing me of the peace I desperately needed.

I am sure there are many people who may have controlled their mouth a lot better than I did. I also know there are some who would have said much more. Nevertheless, I have discovered that in whatever circumstance, when trouble comes (and it will
