    Chapter 1

    Happy Birthday America

Well: It was the 4th of July 2017. A beautiful summer day mid’ 70’s, sun shining with a cool northwest breeze blowing on my face. As we floated across the harbor on the ferry pulling out from the Jersey dock. We were heading for Liberty Island to watch the fireworks. I was feeling good as I looked around at the diverse crowd on board. Fathers, mothers and children of all different shapes, sizes and color with their coolers and lawn chairs in hand. Busy trying to keep the excited children under control. Everyone was dressed in a variety of summer clothing, laughing and being courteous to each other. Where else can such a variety of people celebrate life together. Only in America. There was a group of what looks like newscasters with their cameras and equipment in hand to record the event, I’m sure. They were huddled around talking like they do this every year. This was the first time for me. I was still not sure why I was even here at all. I’m from small town USA still wondering why I even made the ten hour drive into the Big Apple, just to watch the fireworks live from New York City. I mean, they have an awesome show at the lake, right at home with no traffic jams. This wasn’t even something on my bucket list.

I was sitting on my back porch, praying and talking to the Lord about a month earlier. We were talking about current and upcoming events. I asked the Lord where He likes to go to watch America celebrate. He said that sometimes he likes to go to Liberty Island and watch the show. Then the Holy Spirit stirred up inside me and started prompting me to go to Liberty Island to watch the extreme display first hand. At first I thought, that’s crazy, that’s a long way to go just to watch fireworks. Alas, the prompting got stronger. I felt like there was something important the Lord wanted me to see and experience. It wasn’t the first time I’ve been urged by the Holy Spirit to go on a road trip somewhere. I found from experience that if I obeyed and went with it. It usually lead to wisdom and blessings. Likewise when I didn’t obey and didn’t go I would regret it. I would feel as if I missed out on something important.

So there I was, leaning on the rail, looking over the New York City skylight as evening approaches. Coming from small town America, I couldn’t even imagine how so many people could live, survive, prosper and be happy in such an immensely overwhelming environment. Where do they go for peace, quiet and solitude for pray and reflection? I suppose a local church, a park or a rooftop would be their sanctuary. I don’t see how so many people, with so many different dreams, talents, desires, religious beliefs and faith. Live, work and socialize together without destroying each other. Only in America! I see that the vision for a land of diverse people, all equal and free as citizens, is alive and strong at the core of the American spirit despite our differences of opinions and beliefs. I’m sure there are moments of conflicts and disputes among some, but as a whole, there has to be something in the air and in the hearts of men that keeps the peace and goodwill alive. I would hope and like to think that it’s their trust in God, Christ and the Holy Spirit as they apply biblical principles to guide and direct their lives. As they pursue their personal version of happiness and a life complete and fulfilled. In an attempt to achieve the American dream.

Well; We’re about half way there, and as we approach Liberty Island I began to see the silhouette of the grand Lady of Liberty, standing tall and proud in the harbor. Forever watching over the land and the people as they live and prosper in a nation of freedom and opportunity. Pursuing the dream of family, home, and provision. Freedom to pursue God’s will in our personal lives and destiny. We all choose our own fate as we pursue our own individual destiny.

As we approached closer and the detailed features of the statue became more defined, the children started to get excited and anxious, wanting to get closer and check it out. I suppose. I started to wonder what does Lady Liberty see and how does she feel about the current culture and state of America. Is it fulfilling her dream and destiny? Was this the intent? Is this the ordained will of God for Americas destiny? Or was there something more, something bigger, better planned? Wasn’t America ordained to be a Christian Nation? Is America a Christian Nation today?? Honestly, looking around and from what I’ve seen and heard in the media lately, I’m not too sure we are. My spiritual eyes and ears tell me that we’re in the middle of a spiritual civil war, for the soul and fate of this great land.

Well as we landed at the dock, everyone was getting ready to depart, gathering their kids and gear. I grabbed my small cooler and camera pedestal and got in line. As we walked up the dock toward the statue. I could see it was larger than I imagined and looking good for being 130 years old. Then again, I read something about her getting a makeover recently. It was a couple hours before sunset, so I started to look around at some of the exhibits available. They told an interesting tale about the island and its impact on America’s destiny.

Welcoming all those who were seeking a better life and environment to raise their beloved families in a safe and free environment. As long as they were willing to embrace the American spirit, pledge allegiance to it and become productive American citizens. Obeying and respecting our constitutional beliefs and laws and to participate in becoming. One nation under God. I saw one plaque commemorating the Irish and other European people who came over in early 1900’s when there was talk of war with Germany. Which had an agenda of persecuting anyone not conforming to their standard. I wondered is this was what the Lord wanted to show me. How we were ordained to be a refuge, a shelter, a sanctuary for persecuted Jewish and Christian brothers and sisters in the world during their times of torment abroad.

Of course, as a construction worker, I had to study the architecture, the design, and construction of the statue and courtyard. I was impressed with the craftsmanship of the pedestal on which she stands. All cut and polished marble and granite. They just don’t make them like that anymore, would be too expensive. I saw the cameramen and the crowd heading towards the northwest part of the courtyard to get set up and settled in to celebrate America’s birthday.

I’m not much for crowds. Solitary is my style. So I wandered off toward the park looking for a secluded place to see the show. As I strolled along the park, searching for a place to set up and relax. I noticed a strange light blue glow coming from a park bench near the point. My curiosity aroused. I walked toward the light to see the source. As I neared the bench I could see the light was shaped like a person. I stopped for a second and wondered if it was a ghost or something. I took a second to pray about it and ask. What’s going on here. I didn’t receive an answer, but I had a peace about it. I didn’t spiritually sense anything evil about it, so I continued. When I approached the bench I could see the person was. The spirit of Lady Liberty America herself. Adorned in her royal robe, with her crown glowing on her head and her book laying on the bench beside her. Her torch was in a stand, but the light within was rather dim. I approached her slowly and asked if I could join her on the bench. With a warm and joyful smile and a light in her eyes, she surprisingly replied, I would be honored.

It wasn’t an audible voice, more of a voice that I could hear with my spiritual ears, in my mind. This surprised me because, why would such a noble lady, be honored with my company? This was truly an honor for me.

I said thank you and set my cooler down on the ground and placed my camera and pedestal on the edge of the bench. I sat down, looking at her face and wondering why was she smiling so much. I said my name is Alan. I was prompted by the Holy Spirit to come here and watch the fireworks tonight.

She laughed and said, I know, and I know
