Face to Face - Lorita Carol Lee
The Memories of Her Past
Lorita is the oldest girl of seven children, born to Roma Jewel Walker and Edward Carroll Walker. She grew up in a small town called Yazoo City in the late 1950s, early 1960s, to 1970s. As the oldest girl, she always had a tremendous responsibility in helping taking care of the family and the other children. Her parents brought her and her siblings up in church and taught them from a very young age that God was the most important person in their lives. Growing up with this belief in God, her teachings taught her that God can do anything but fail. Lorita most definitely believed this about God and his almighty power and love for mankind and herself. Even though Lorita grew up in rural Yazoo City, her parents provided them a good life. Her family did not have much money, but her parents worked very hard in providing a good life for Lorita and her siblings the necessities of life. Lorita did not realize until she became a young woman that her family was considered poor. She never felt poor as a child growing up.
Lorita had never endured without the necessities of life, until early 1979. She was about nineteen years old at this time. Lorita, as many young girls during this time, decided to marry her childhood sweetheart. Her fairy tale soon turned into a nightmare. She did not realize until later in life, as many young ladies, her decision turned out to be a poor one. This decision would be so traumatic in affecting her life and her unborn children’s lives for the next three years and the remainder of her life. Even though her husband worked very hard, he also drank alcohol just as hard after work. In dealing with his own insecurities, he would verbally and physically abuse Lorita. This continued for the duration of their marriage. She struggled very hard with trying to make this marriage work, but she knew she could not do this all along. Lorita and her husband both decided that together they would work even harder on their marriage. They decided, as most couples, to start a family. The physical and mental abuse was an on and off situation. The birth of a child only added to the already complicated and complex situation. Despite their decision, Lorita became pregnant after about five or six months. On February 7, 1982, a beautiful baby boy was born. Her husband was so proud of his new son. Her husband was already a junior, so they decided to name him Leon Kantrell Stevenson. In less than six month, Lorita found out she was pregnant again. This could not have come at a worse time. The marriage had not and was not getting any better. The physical and mental torment was exhausting. She knew she could not continue to live in fear for her life and possibly her children’s life. She refused to raise her children in this dysfunctional environment. Her husband would act better one week, but the next week, the abuse would start all over again. This was unfair to her and most certainly unfair for her innocent babies. Lorita knew she had to make a drastic decision. She was faced with the decision of divorce before the birth of her second unborn child. She knew her decision was a major one. Her future and the future of her children would be affected greatly. She struggled very, very hard in her heart and mind. She seeks God for the answer. After great deliberation with herself, and still dealing with this unperfect marriage, she came to the conclusion she could not bring another child into this abusive relationship. Lorita decided she wanted a divorce but had not discussed this matter with her husband. It was hard enough trying to endure the abuse with one child. This unplanned pregnancy, two children, no
