    Introduction

We can measure the strength of relationships in many different areas of our lives. We can measure the relationships that are our marriages. We can measure the relationships that are our friendships. We can even measure relationships with our associates. But how many of us measure our relationship with God? Think about this for a moment: How would you describe your relationship with God? Is your relationship with God strong or weak? Do you wish it was different than it is now? Are your relationships with mankind better than your relationship with God? The Holy Spirit revealed to me that a good or bad relationship can affect our lives. This book will explore the truth that we must live in close relationship with God in order to experience the fullness of life that God wants us to have when we follow him.

The book is called We Are One, and the foundational scripture on which it’s written is a statement by Jesus in John 10:30, I and my Father are one. Think of that statement for a moment: I and my Father are one. If there’s anything we should meditate on, it should be that we are one with our God. What does that mean to you?

Think of a husband and wife when they say, We are one. A sports team that says, We are one. A business that says, We are one. A nation that says, We are one. Now take a moment and recognize that the Bible says that those who have received Christ as their Savior have the Spirit of God living within them. Oneness with God—how awesome and powerful is that? If you’re a Christian, that is the seed you can meditate on to change your life. What does it mean to be one with God to you? If you truly believe you are one with God, then you can never be fearful of anything again. If you are one with God, then nothing can disturb your peace. If you are one with God, then nothing can keep you up at night worrying. If you are one with God, then you see things differently than others do; you can see with the eyes of Jesus. You might be low on food in the morning, but you trust God that there’s going to be food by evening. No matter how bad the situation looks in the natural, your relationship with God can change it through faith. If you are one with God, then no one can tell you that the situation is hopeless.

Whenever people told Jesus bad news, he didn’t get upset. Jesus just changed the situation. That’s the ability we have if we’re one with God. Truly, walking with God is the only reality that exists. Jesus said in John 17:16, They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. We should be living like we’re not of this world, and the key to making it a reality is knowing and accepting we are one with God. I’m not talking about getting saved, filled with the Holy Spirit, and going to church. That’s good, but there’s more after that. We must remember that Jesus did not give up his life for our homes, cars, money, and fame. Jesus came to reconcile us to God.

The greatest treasure that can be found on the earth is walking with God. Some of us think that material things or a certain lifestyle will bring happiness into our lives. People need to realize we are saved by grace. We’re already blessed with all things by Jesus finished work. Many people must meditate that over and over to believe we don’t have to work for our blessings like cars, homes, money, etc. What we do have to work on is establishing a relationship with God. This only occurs over time. Blessings we receive by faith but our relationship with God is ongoing. The key factor that changed things for Abraham was his relationship with God. Romans 4:13 in the New Living Translation stated that, clearly, God’s promise to give the whole earth to Abraham and his descendants was based, not on his obedience to God’s law, but on a right relationship with God that comes by faith. The truth is that having a life with God is the answer to everything.

In John 10:30, Jesus stated, I and my Father are one. Jesus didn’t say, I and the Father are one. He said, "I and my Father are one (emphasis added). Paul made a similar statement in Philippians 4:19, But my God shall supply all your needs" (emphasis added). Saying we are one with God is personal. Some people think that God is thousands of miles in the distance away from them, but the truth is God is ever-present. There is a blessing that is visible in the lives of those who are one with God. There’s a difference between knowing about someone and knowing someone. I believe a lot of people know of God and had a little connection with him but haven’t taken their relationship with him to the next level.

As I said earlier, getting saved and filled with the Holy Spirit are just the beginning. Some people just stop right there and never establish a close relationship with God. A husband and wife do more than just get married. They must continue to build their relationship to have a happy marriage. We can all agree that if husbands and wives don’t work on their relationship with one another, their marriage will be in jeopardy. I believe some believers’ relationships with God are in jeopardy, and they don’t know it. Hebrews 13:5 says, For he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. We must realize it’s possible to be saved and still live like you’re under the curse of sin. If you believe you are one with God, then you shouldn’t be living a cursed life with debt, sickness, and failure. The two lifestyles can’t live together side by side.

This book is really about relationships. My advice to everyone reading this book is to read each section and meditate on it. Ask yourself, Where do I really stand with God? Are you a church member or a disciple of Christ? I know we are not supposed to compete with one another, but how does your relationship with God compare with Jesus, Abraham, Enoch, David, or Elijah’s relationship with God? My prayer is that by the end of reading this book, everyone’s relationship with God will be stronger and better. God has saved us from Satan, but he also wants a relationship with each of us. What good parent doesn’t want a relationship with their child? What child wouldn’t want a good relationship with their parent? Let’s continue to read what God has to say about this.
