    Preface

Every once in a while, I run across a book that I can relate to and wholeheartedly recommend. The Work of His Hands: Targeting Your Spiritual Gifts is one of those books.

Linda’s life story growing up in a little nowhere town in Pennsylvania struck me hard having spent my own childhood on an obscure island in Indonesia. Yet God’s hand was upon her leading and guiding her long before she realized what He was doing and before she was able to connect the dots.

It was during the Voice of Healing years that she saw first-hand the healing miracles of Kathryn Kuhlman, A. A. Allen, Oral Roberts and the like and that exposure was drawing her towards her own destiny of a healing ministry. Even as a child, she would play Oral Roberts pretending to heal the sick as they were slain in the spirit.

This book will excite all who read it as we all have a calling and destiny on our lives to fulfill. It was mapped out long before we were born. Psalm 139:16 tells us that we each have a book in heaven written with our days laid out by the Master Planner.

Parents will also be encouraged as they read how God works in children’s lives. Never give up praying for them! We never know what the Lord will use to catapult our children into their own destiny.

Not only does Linda share her own life journey, but then goes on in Section 2 to teach on the spiritual gifts that the Holy Spirit equips each one of us with so that we can accomplish our God-given purpose. There is also an accompanying workbook to help identity those gifts.

Whether you are struggling to define your place in God’s plan or are already on the road to accomplishing what He has called you to do, I highly recommend this book to you. Not only will it bless you in many ways but will move you closer towards God’s blueprint for your life.

    Author, Like a Mighty Wind

    Introduction

And it shall come to pass afterward,

    That I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh;

And your sons and daughters shall prophesy,

Your old men shall dream dreams,

Your young men shall see visions

And upon the servants and upon the handmaids

In those days will I pour out my spirit.

    —Joel 2:28–29 (KJV)

The visions would come at night when only the chimes of the living room clock and the rhythmic breathing of my sleeping husband lying beside me could be heard.

On this particular cold, February morning, I struggled out of a sound sleep at 3:30 a.m., trying to gain some sense of consciousness. For seven nights, I had been having a series of spiritual visions, and I knew the Lord was awakening me again to join Him in that secret place that only He and I could share. The Lord Jesus would visit me, and we would enjoy fellowship together. There were times when He would teach me truths; other times, He would give revelation. And sometimes we would travel in silence, yet I was always keenly aware of His presence. We traveled in an otherly dimension, crossing various terrains. Each symbolized a specific time in my spiritual walk, often playing out like an Indiana Jones adventure.

Just as Paul said in 2 Corinthians 12:2 when he had a vision of heaven, I don’t know if I was in my body or out of my body, I can echo the same, but it was all very real and very tangible.

I propped myself up on my pillows on this night, waiting in anticipation for a continuation of the same type of vision, but this time, what I saw was completely unexpected! With sleep-encrusted yet wide-open eyes, I observed out of my peripheral vision, a flat, rectangular object suspended in midair, floating toward me from the right side of the bed.

It was as if time stood still and the physical realm dropped out. Brightly lit, this unidentified flying object stopped at the foot of my bed at eye level, directly in front of me. I curiously peered at it and, to my wonderment, identified it as a book. I could see it all very clearly and made note of every intricate detail: the artwork, the title, and the most shocking of all, the author’s name—it was mine!

Then I heard a voice. I can’t say if I heard it with my physical ears or in my spirit, but I certainly recognized it. I had heard it many times before. It was the voice of my beloved Lord. This, He said, is the book you will write. It was a distinct mandate from God Almighty!

I stayed in His presence until the gray shadows of daybreak were broken up by the rays of the dawning sun, at which time I arose and sketched out what I had seen. My thoughts were that one day—someday—I would write this book. I tucked it way back in the filing cabinet of my mind, in a drawer labeled, Someday, and went off to start the morning coffee.

But someday came sooner than I had imagined. A month after the vision, I attended a spiritual renewal conference. The guest speaker was Jill Austin. Jill had a heavy prophetic anointing, and I tried to attend her meetings whenever possible. Amazing things would happen in her services, and this one was no exception—not by a long shot!

As the anointing of the Holy Spirit descended on that meeting, Jill moved out into the congregation and began to prophesy to several individuals. I was on the end of an aisle, and she passed by me to give a prophetic word to a young man in the back row. As she was coming back down the aisle, she stopped behind me, laid her hand on my shoulder, and asked me to stand. My heart was wildly beating in my chest, and my mind was spinning. To my utter astonishment, she spoke a word of knowledge. There’s a book that God wants you to write, and you know about it. The only ones who knew about that book were God, me, and my immediate family with whom I had shared the vision. Jill didn’t know me or my name let alone know about the book. Even more bewildering was the fact that she went on to say that God wanted me to start writing it now.

Not long afterward, my next confirmation came by way of a pastor on our church staff, Pastor Gwen Tackett. On a Sunday evening, following the service, she stopped me and said, Linda, every time I look at you, I see you writing. Are you writing a book? There was no getting away from God’s call. He had made it absolutely clear.

And so the journey began, searching the mountain of personal journals which I have faithfully written over the previous thirty-five years, revisiting my instructional materials on spiritual gifts, and digging out some of my long-forgotten sermons. I believe the release of this book is now for such a time as this all set on God’s timetable.

To help you navigate through this book, Section 1 is the testimony of this ordinary woman living an ordinary life, in an ordinary world, touched by the hand of an extraordinary God. It’s the story of how He took me through winding paths and uncharted territory to bring me into my destiny and calling. My hope is that, as you read this, you too will hunger to have this same God touch your life, and you will begin your own personal journey to fulfill His purposes for you.

Section 2 is a teaching tool on the gifts of the Spirit

(1 Corinthians 12, Ephesians 4, and Romans 12) to help you target your spiritual gifts and equip you with everything good for doing his will. It is the compilation of lessons that I have been imparting for many years in churches, conferences, and retreats.

In Section 3, I share some remarkable stories of people whose lives have been changed by the work of His hands through supernatural interventions and miracles. I have diligently tried to verify the accounts presented. Some are supported by facts and documentation; others…well, I leave up to you. Personal encounters with Christ can be expressed in words but cannot be shared in experience; they are one-on-one. Therefore, some experiences can be substantiated while others will have to be taken by faith.

As this last spiritual era, the dispensation of grace, quickly draws to an end, my desire is to see other ordinaries like myself rise up and begin to move in their individual gifts and callings with signs and wonders following. Joel 2 tells us that there will be a revival in the last days unlike any other spiritual visitation that has exploded and ebbed over the canvas of history. This move of God will not be led by only an anointed few; uniquely, it will be an outpouring on all flesh—including men and women, old and young, and children—all prophesying, dreaming God-instigated dreams, and seeing beyond the veil. It is a call-to-arms to the Church to destroy the works of the enemy and to bring in as many as possible to the knowledge of Jesus Christ via the supernatural work of the Holy Spirit’s power, operating through those who choose to be on the front lines right before Christ’s return.

And so, I present to you The Work of His Hands: Targeting Your Spiritual Gifts, evidence of God’s hands honing and shaping lives through trials, tribulations, defeats, victories, and experiences with Him, being led each day by His Holy Spirit. He continues to look for ordinary people to do extraordinary work for His Kingdom. My prayer is that you are one of those who will seek to have life-changing encounters with Him, crawling after Him in desperation for His presence, and finding yourself in the vortex of the tornado of His Spirit, doing all that He has called you to do. I can guarantee it will be a wild and exciting ride!

    In His service,

    Rev. Linda C. Triska

    Under Construction

Yet, O Lord, you are our Father. We are the clay, you are the potter; we are all the work of your hand.

    —Isaiah 64:8 (NIV)

    Chapter 1

    In the Beginning

Humble beginnings is probably the best way to describe my origins. I was born in Western Pennsylvania in the small, unassuming town of Canonsburg, snuggled in the northeastern end of Washington County.

When I was young, in order to raise its (and my) importance, I would loftily say, Oh, you know, where Perry Como is from. At that time, of course, everyone would knowingly nod, giving the desired response of being highly impressed, as if his fame had anything whatever to do with me. But then the younger generation came along, and the question was, Who is Perry Como? I then switched to Bobby Vinton, another famous denizen of Canonsburg. That worked for a while, but eventually, I ran into the same problem of a generation who was clueless as to the renown of Bobby Vinton. At that point, I decided to just say it was about forty miles southwest of Pittsburgh and left it at that, allowing Canonsburg to sink into anonymity once again.

My grandparents on both sides of my family were Italian immigrants who arrived in the United States in the early 1900s through Ellis Island, New York. From New York, they migrated to Western Pennsylvania and settled around the Pittsburgh area.

It was all in God’s plan for them to come to America, because somewhere along the line, someone shared the Gospel of Jesus Christ with them, and they all received Christ as their Lord and Savior. Both families then began to attend the Christian Church of North America (CCNA) in Canonsburg. The CCNA was established by Italian-Americans in 1927 in Niagara Falls, New York, and was part of the United States Pentecostal movement occurring in the early twentieth century. Today, it is known as the International Fellowship of Christian Assemblies, an affiliate of the Assemblies of God.¹

    The church my grandparents founded.

    Spiritual DNA

My maternal grandfather passed away before I was born. As a result, my grandmother, Philomena, lived with our family for many years. Of all the grandparents, I knew her best. She was the most colorful character of our lot.

Rick, my younger brother, dubbed her Phil, and that’s what stuck. It somehow rather suited her. She was short, only standing about four feet, ten inches tall, and always seemed old to me with her thin gray hair pulled back in a bun and her slow, unsteady gait on thin, spindly legs. But she was always jolly, and her great round belly would shake when she laughed, reminiscent of Old Saint Nick. When we would make reference to it, she would become very serious and answer that she wasn’t fat but that her stomach was a-swell-a (interpretation: swollen). Of course, we all knew better—she liked her pasta!

Before Grandma Phil gave her life to Christ, she had that legendary Italian temper, but God knew what He was doing with her. When she opened her heart to Him, it was with a welcomed abandon, and that fiery temper became a fire for the Holy Spirit. With great passion, she became an all-out soul winner for Christ. She had a great faith that did not waver.

When my mom was in her teens, my grandparents established another Italian Christian Church of North America in Burgettstown, Pennsylvania. On Thursday afternoons, Grandma and a friend would go door to door in search of other Italians with whom they could share the Gospel and invite to their church. And every Sunday afternoon after service in Canonsburg, the family would go home, eat their spaghetti dinner (spaghetti was always Sunday fare), pile into the family automobile, and ramble to Burgettstown to hold services at the new church. My mom’s brother, Louis Montecalvo, pastored that fledgling church for several years. When he moved on to pastor a church in Florida, my dad’s brother-in-law, Vincent Salituro, pastored there for many years until they took another church in Arkansas. Today, that church, known as the Burgettstown Christian Assembly, still stands as a testament to my family’s obedience to God and is a part of
