Chapter 1
Here you are.
Mommy Beenah placed a small plateful of sliced strawberries beside the steaming bowl of oatmeal on the table. Eat up, honey,
she said to the smiling toddler, who had already begun to dump strawberries into the hot cereal.
Oat…meal,
Kalena Beenah exclaimed, making Mommy clap her hands excitedly.
Good girl,
Mommy shouted.
Daddy Beenah walked into the kitchen and poured a cup of coffee into a large yellow mug.
Say it for Daddy,
Mommy beckoned her small daughter.
Dad…dy,
Kalena said, grinning widely. She was tickled by the pleading looks of her parents, who leaned eagerly over the breakfast table toward her. Oat…meal,
she said again and clapped her hands in unison with her proud parents.
That's my girl,
Daddy told her and kissed her gently on the head. Pretty soon you'll be starting college,
he informed her while opening the morning edition of The Journal newspaper. And here is your favorite page, sweetie.
Daddy placed the Cartoons
page beside Kalena's plate so she could enjoy the colorful drawings.
Anything interesting in the news, dear?
Mommy asked while mixing a bowl full of broken eggs and pouring the yellow liquid into a large skillet.
Not much different from last night,
Daddy replied before folding the paper and placing it on the table beside him. There was another robbery off Main Street, so be sure to avoid that area if you're heading that way today,
he cautioned.
That reminds me,
Mommy whispered. Kalena does need a new pair of sneakers.
She watched the young girl playing more with her food than eating it and dampened a washcloth in the large sink. We'll see if Nordstrom's carries the Disney Princess series Kalena loves so well.
I could use another pair of navy socks,
Daddy suggested. I can't seem to find any matching socks this morning.
He raised his feet to show two mismatched navy socks. One had vertical lines on it, and the other one was just plain.
Oh, honey.
Mommy shook her head and laughed softly. Let me see if I can find one of those matching socks for you,
she offered while wiping the sticky cereal from Kalena's small fingers and chin. Use your spoon, sweetie,
she whispered and placed a purple plastic spoon into the child's hand encouragingly.
Thanks, darling,
Daddy whispered and pulled Mommy onto his lap. Mommy giggled and placed her arms around Daddy's neck. You know I'd be lost without you,
he teased and kissed her smiling lips soundly.
Kalena clapped her small hands and bounced up and down on the high chair. Kiss,
she said excitedly and placed her hand over her puckered mouth before extending it outward again. Mommy, down,
she commanded before gaining freedom from the confining chair.
Mommy placed blue and yellow binkies into a small bowl. These are all clean for you, honey,
she said while smiling and pinching Kalena's cheeks.
I won't ask where you found those.
Daddy laughed. I still don't know how one ended up in my briefcase,
he said.
Mommy poured a cupful of orange juice into a sippy cup and offered it to Kalena. Would you like some juice now?
she asked and clipped a green binky to a long striped ribbon attached to her robe by a plastic clip.
Kalena accepted the red sippy cup from her mother gratefully. Bye, bye,
she told Mommy and Daddy. She popped her blue Binky into her mouth, picked up the page with the pretty colors, and raced to her bedroom. A green Binky swung back and forth from a long striped ribbon attached to her robe by a plastic clip. In her small hand, she grasped the tiny paw of Cubby, her beloved teddy bear and constant companion.
Very good,
Mommy and Daddy both said at once and clapped their hands again proudly. Bye-bye,
they called after her.
Kalena giggled softly and blew another butterfly kiss to her parents. Kiss,
she said again before disappearing into the room.
Daddy pulled Mommy close again and nuzzled her neck playfully. Yes, honey,
he replied in a muffled voice. Lots and lots of kisses.
Chapter 2
Inside her bedroom, Kalena placed Cubby onto the floor beside Bunny, Quackers, and Kitty. Did you see, Cubby?
she asked, barely able to control herself as she sucked heavily on a pink Binky and knelt onto the floor beside them.
Cubby rubbed his furry chin and shook his head thoughtfully. Indeed, I did, my dear.
Cubby watched Kalena, who gnawed happily on the bubbled edges of the pink Binky. I will never understand your fascination with that piece of plastic,
he said somberly.
Bunny, Kitty, and Quackers had puzzled looks on their faces.
See what?
Bunny asked curiously.
Oh, Cubby, it's just fun,
she said reprovingly and giggled. And it feels so smooth and squishy when my gums itch.
She placed the green Binky in her mouth and tossed
