About this ebook
Do you like a good scare?
Come inside, friend. It’s storytime. I have three short tales written for young adult readers.
“The Whistler:” a young girl’s tale of Halloween terror at the hands of a faceless legend.
“The Girl from the Other Side:” a story of envy and magic.
“The Thing at the Foot of the Bed:” a loathsome creature of despicable horror terrorizes a young bedridden soldier.
Get comfortable. Prepare yourself for the chills to come. After all, it’s Halloween night.

Introduction
Halloween Night.
A night of fun and mischief, of costumes and candy and light-hearted revelry.
But it wasn’t always so…
In the ancient past, our ancestors looked to All Hallows Eve with fear and dread. For evil ruled the night. Foul spirits and demons were said to ride the winds. And the souls of the dead walked the earth once again.
Wise people stayed indoors.
Come, friend. Sit with me for a while. Let me take you back to those days with three spirited tales suitable for teen and preteen readers. Allow me to chill your bones first with The Whistler,
a young girl’s tale of Halloween terror at the hands of a faceless legend. Next, The Girl from the Other Side
will tell her story of envy and magic. Then, meet The Thing at the Foot of the Bed,
a loathsome creature of despicable horror that terrorizes a young bedridden soldier.
Look! The sun is sinking low and the shadows are ever deepening. Is that lightning flashing in the distance? Can you hear the rumble of thunder?
Sit, friend. For the night is only beginning. The first tale has yet to be told…

Her mother smiled as she brushed Abby’s raven hair and plopped a pointed witch hat on her head.
Abby placed her hands on her hips. Do you promise?
I promise,
replied Mrs. Browne. Now put your lower lip back into your mouth before you trip on it!
Abby grinned. Then she peered longingly into her plastic treat bucket. When I come back, you’re going to be filled to the top with candy! And I hope it’s all chocolate!
Chocolate candy,
her mother repeated. With raspberry filling. And later the Halloween carnival!
Yay!
Abby clapped excitedly before peering into the kitchen where her older sister Cate was carving a pumpkin. Are you sure you won’t come with us?
Cate sneered as she looked up from the pumpkin. Trick-or-treating is for babies!
"It’s not for babies! cried Abby, her hands back on her hips as her face twisted into an angry grimace.
It’s for children! And you’re a child, too!"
"I’m
