Cowboy Poetry: Coffee Table Tid Bits

About this ebook
A lot of the poetry in this book is based upon experiences of my own, and many more of my poems stem from other events that I have firsthand knowledge of. My ancestors came to America in the late 1600s, so I have a lot of family history to draw on. Also, I have tossed in a few which I hope will create a bit of humor.

Cowboy Poetry - Frank Lott
The Old Barn
There’s deer horns nailed on the old barn wall
And saddles hanging in front of the horse stalls
For years, the old barn has stood
And there are many stories in its weathered wood
The date 1928 carved into one of its walls
Was from the family riding out a storm and the old barn saved them all
Caught without warning as a killer hurricane approached
The roads were washed out and they had nowhere to go
They knew the clapboard house would never stand
So, they waded through water to the barn, leading children by the hand
As the wind howled and the water rose above the stall gates
They climbed up into the hayloft to await their fate
Finally, the sun rose and the wind began to lay
They had survived and thanked God in their own way
Developers have offered big money for the old homeplace
But to see the old barn destroyed would be a disgrace
Because along with six sisters and brothers
The other child in the hayloft that night was my mother
So out of respect, for as long I’m able and I can
I’ll keep the old barn repaired and let it stand
The Bronc
It’s now or never, let the hair go with the hide
Spur him deep, cowboy, and give him a ride
You’ve lost your hat, cowboy, it’s on the ground
And they can hear him bellow clean to town
Every time he bucks spur him again
And he’ll soon figure out that he can’t win
That’s how it is and always was
Buck him out first then train him with love
He’s a smart one I can see it in his eye
And if you slip, he’ll toss you a mile high
He’s sunfishing and giving it all he’s got
But hang on cowboy and soon he’ll start to trot
You’ll have him then, just a matter of time
And in a few days, he’ll turn on a dime
Yea that’s how it is and always was
Buck him out first then train him with love
I’ve seen some rank ones over the years
Bite and kick you as they flatten their ears
But they’re the ones that turn out the best
Make you glad you got him and not the rest
Well, you’ve bucked him out and he’s started to trot
So be gentle now, cowboy, and he’ll give you all he’s got
Yea, that’s how it is and always was
Buck ’em out first then train ’em with love
The Old Cowboy
He’s roped a big bull and getting drug along
He’s roped a big bull and he’s all alone
He’s a big bull and he means to win
He’s bigger than his horse by half again
He’s an ole cowboy, one of the best
And he knows for a real cowboy this is the test
The young guys think he’s over the hill
But he’s got him roped and he knows it’s real
He’s been here a few times before
And he thanks God he brought a good horse
The bull slobbers, bellows, and tosses his head
Cowboys have tried this and wound up dead
This bull gored two horses and nearly killed a man
And he means to get him or make his last stand
His horse is dug in holding all that he can
And so far, it’s all
