    Another Sunny Day in Hell

I open my front door and sit on my porch.

I light a cigarette like I have done hundreds of times before.

The leaves on the trees have all fallen to the ground and the trees are bare.

It is winter, but it is sunny and warm.

I think to myself that all this will be gone some day?

    The houses and apartment buildings.

The street and the sidewalks and the streetlights.

    All the cars and people.

I look south towards the beach.

Everything will be underwater from a flood.

I am only a quarter of a mile from the ocean’s waves.

Or maybe underground from a huge earthquake.

    Perhaps both.

I hope not in my daughter’s lifetime, but I don’t know?

Sooner or later Mother Nature takes it all back.

    She’s good like that.

I think of all the good and bad times I have had in this apartment and on this street.

    I am on house arrest.
