About this ebook
Jesus Christ: The Ultimate Social Worker, A 31-Day Devotional for Social Workers, focuses on the Lord's work with human beings as shown in the Gospel of Luke. Luke, being a physician, depicts Jesus' "human touch" on those to whom He ministered. We see this as He feeds the multitudes, heals the sick, and encourages the brokenhearted. Luke shows Jesus' devotion and attention to the natural needs of mankind, making Him the ultimate social worker.
Although this book is geared for social workers, it can be used in paraprofessional work and executive director responsibilities in social support organizations all over the world. It is the Christian's job to show the love of Jesus at every level of this work. This book shows us how to do this as we will see Jesus manifesting love and kindness by meeting the basic needs of those who come to Him for help.
This book will allow you to understand practical ways of sharing God's love as you work with your clients and your co-workers. By observing how Jesus is concerned with the everyday needs of the poor, sick, and mentally ill, you will be able to emulate His techniques and assist your clients in ways that are lasting and empowering.
This thirty-one-day devotional will guide you through each chapter of the Gospel of Luke. You will be asked questions regarding how you measure up in situations similar to those demonstrated in the passages. You will then be asked to create a prayer to assist you in being able to perform as Jesus did in the designated reading. By the end of the thirty-one days, it is my prayer that you will have the ability to excel in social work in ways you did not see possible. In doing so, you will be resembling Jesus Christ: The Ultimate Social Worker.

Day 1
Bringing Light and Peace: The Goal of Social Work
Read Luke 1.
Focus: Luke 1:78-79
Luke 1 paints a beautiful picture of important events leading up to Jesus’ birth. God carefully prepared people for Christ’s coming by demonstrating miraculous signs to prove the seriousness of His plans. Zechariah prophesied that Jesus, the Light of the World, was to shine upon a planet in darkness and guide it to peace.
This is the essence of social work—the Lord bringing many people to us for light and peace, for this is the ultimate goal of our work. God will use us in many ways in order to achieve this goal, and we must be ready to be used.
List three ways you can prepare yourself now to let your light shine and guide your clients to peace.
Write a brief prayer asking the Lord to assist you in your preparation.
Day 2
Social Work is God’s Work
Read Luke 2.
Focus: Luke 2:49
In the verses above, Jesus does not waste a moment’s time. He begins His duties as a social worker at a very young age, expounding on the Scriptures with men in the temple, with great power and authority, and those around Him are very impressed.
His parents, however, are not initially impressed, because they have been frantically looking for Him. But Jesus informs His parents that they should have known He was doing His Father’s work. This should be our reputation in the social work field. Everyone should know us as people who are about the great work of our clients’ healing and peace, because social work is God’s work.
Prayerfully consider Jesus’ words to His parents. Think about how focused He was on His obligation as a social worker. He understood the work He was doing was God’s work. Now describe your own attitude as a social worker.
Construct a prayer asking God to show you ways your mindset can become more like Jesus’ as He conducted His work as a social worker.
Day 3
Social Work is a Calling
Read Luke 3.
Focus: Luke 3:21-22
