CHAPTER ONE
Nickels the Magical Elf
Once upon a time, there lived deep in the forest a magical little elf named Nickels. He had long curly red hair, a bright smile, and magical freckles that covered his face. Each magical freckle was a wish that could be granted. All you had to do was capture him, hold him down, and give him a kiss on one of his freckles, and your wish would come true. But the trick to capturing any elf was a well-hidden one and known only by a few powerful wizards. And capturing a magical elf, why, that was impossible. It just couldn’t be done.
A magical elf was too quick and too cunning to be caught. Why, when his mother gave him the magical freckles, each one was a special kiss that she had placed on him. And each kiss came with the knowledge of magic spells. So you see, how very hard it would be to capture such an elf and steal a wish. Nickels remembered all the times when he was growing up that his mother would caution him against leaving the forest and going around the Big People.
They were selfish and demanding and cared little for elves. She told him of terrible things that had happened to other elves in the world of the Big People. Some were captured and put in the circus, in little cages, others made to work in the mines—why, she knew personally of seven such elves that this had happened to.
Their whole lives were spent working and singing, Heigh-ho, heigh-ho, it’s off to work we go.
Some of the other elves were made to work in tree house factories making cookies. Others had children chasing them, trying to steal their breakfast cereals. So you understand why mother elf was so worried about Nickels. If the Big People were so mean to regular elves, what would they do to a magical elf that could grant wishes?
Nickels promised his mother faithfully. He would stay away from the edge of the forest and from the Big People. Because most of the older elves had left to go to the North Pole to learn how to make toys, Nickels was left alone and spent his time just doing elfin things, like finding pots of gold at the end of rainbows, looking for lucky four-leaf clovers in the forest, and playing games with all the little forest animals.
Then, one day, when he was running through the forest, he heard a strange sound. He stopped and listened, but he didn’t know what it was. Slowly he sneaked to the top of a mossy hill and peeked over. What he saw amazed him. There were several small people playing games and laughing. It made him smile, though he was afraid because they looked like Big People, but they were much smaller. He was confused but very curios anyway. As he lay there watching for quite some time, it began to get dark, and he knew he had to get home. Besides, the little ones were leaving, too, all except one little girl who kept looking over her shoulder in Nickels direction. Had she seen me? he thought, afraid to move for fear of being discovered. It seemed as
