The Battlefield - Tim Malm
Day One
After the death of Moses the servant of the Lord, the Lord said to Joshua son of Nun, Moses’ aide (v. 1): ‘Moses my servant is dead. Now then, you and all these people, get ready to cross the Jordan River into the land I am about to give to them—to the Israelites (v. 2). I will give you every place where you set your foot, as I promised Moses (v. 3). Your territory will extend from the desert to Lebanon, and from the great river, the Euphrates—all the Hittite country—to the Mediterranean Sea in the west (v. 4). No one will be able to stand against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you (v. 5). Be strong and courageous, because you will lead these people to inherit the land I swore to their ancestors to give them (v. 6). Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go (v. 7). Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful (v. 8). Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go (v. 9).’ So Joshua ordered the officers of the people (v. 10): ‘Go through the camp and tell the people,
Get your provisions ready. Three days from now you will cross the Jordan here to go in and take possession of the land the Lord your God is giving you for your own (v. 11).’ But to the Reubenites, the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh, Joshua said (v. 12), ‘Remember the command that Moses the servant of the Lord gave you after he said,
The Lord your God will give you rest by giving you this land (v. 13). Your wives, your children and your livestock may stay in the land that Moses gave you east of the Jordan, but all your fighting men, ready for battle, must cross over ahead of your fellow Israelites. You are to help them (v. 14) until the Lord gives them rest, as he has done for you, and until they too have taken possession of the land the Lord your God is giving them. After that, you may go back and occupy your own land, which Moses the servant of the Lord gave you east of the Jordan toward the sunrise (v. 15).’ Then they answered Joshua, ‘Whatever you have commanded us we will do, and wherever you send us we will go (v. 16). Just as we fully obeyed Moses, so we will obey you. Only may the Lord your God be with you as he was with Moses (v. 17). Whoever rebels against your word and does not obey it, whatever you may command them, will be put to death. Only be strong and courageous (v. 18)’
(Josh. 1:1–18).
To me, this is an awesome display of faith! When God told Joshua, You’re gonna lead these people through the Jordan,
I think I’d of been like, "Whoa, God, you say I’m gonna do what? I can’t even lead my dog that well! Do you know who you’re talking to? I’m not a leader! But Joshua just accepted it and went to work. You think He meant,
Be strong and courageous? And then He says again in verse 7,
Be strong and very courageous. I could be wrong, but I kinda think God means it, where He repeated it! Now if someone in charge of you, like your parents, repeats something, it usually means they mean it, don’t they? Well, God is called
the Good Father in the Bible and I’m believing He meant it! Did you know that
do not fear" is used 365 times in the Bible? Ya, think God means it? I think this chapter teaches us that it’s okay to put all our trust in Him, that even when it doesn’t look like there’s any possible way, He will make a way!
Spend some time in prayer and ask Him to show what areas you’re not giving up to Him. Don’t forget to thank Him for all He’s blessed you with!

Day Two
"Then Joshua son of Nun secretly sent two spies from Shittim. ‘Go, look over the land,’ he said, ‘especially Jericho.’ So they went and entered the house of a prostitute named Rahab and stayed there (v. 1). The king of Jericho was told, ‘Look, some of the Israelites have come here tonight to spy out the land (v. 2).’ So the king of Jericho sent this message to Rahab: ‘Bring out the men who came to you and entered your house, because they have come to spy out the whole land (v. 3).’ But the woman had taken the two men and hidden them. She said, ‘Yes, the men came to me, but I did not know where they had come from (v. 4). At dusk, when it was time to close the city gate, they left. I don’t know which way they went. Go after them quickly. You may catch up with them (v. 5).’ But she had taken them up to the roof and hidden them under the stalks of flax she had laid out on the roof (v. 6). So the men set out in pursuit of the spies on the road that leads to the fords of the Jordan, and as soon as the pursuers had gone out, the gate was shut (v. 7). Before the spies lay down for the night, she went up on the roof (v. 8) and said to them, ‘I know that the Lord has given you this land and that a great fear of you has fallen on us, so that all who live in this country are melting in fear because of you (v. 9). We have heard how the Lord dried up the water of the Red Sea (v. 10a) for you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to Sihon and Og, the two kings of the Amorites east of the Jordan, whom you completely destroyed (v. 10b). When we heard of it, our hearts melted in fear and everyone’s courage failed because of you, for the Lord your God is God in heaven above and on the earth below (v. 11). Now then, please swear to me by the Lord that you will show kindness to my family, because I have shown kindness to you. Give me a sure sign (v. 12) that you will spare the lives of my father and mother, my brothers and sisters, and all who belong to them—and that you will save us from death (v.
