Divorce Roadmap for Moms - Nikol Watts Blackmon
Chapter 1
Getting Ready
The divorce process is not an easy one to navigate. People don’t generally get married with the idea that they will be divorced in the future. Regardless of if you had an inclination that the divorce was looming or if it took you by surprise, it will prove to be an exhausting experience.
Some people want to rush through the divorce process, and this can lead to costly mistakes. I will share some of the best practices I learned through my divorce. I chose to think of my divorce process in two ways: (1) like a marathon race and (2) like a business meeting with someone I did not like but needed to collaborate with in a professional way to complete a project. This helped me remove some of the emotion from the process and allowed me to make rational decisions and think more strategically.
Show up prepared and ready to fight for you and your children. This is a not a time to be stubborn and just refuse everything; take time to pause and think strategically about the future. Think past today and think long-term.
In the coming chapters, I will share tips to assist you on your journey of divorce. It will not be a pleasant journey, but one you have to face. Following a step-by-step process can help you alleviate some of the pitfalls and, hopefully, allow you to think of things differently. This is just a guide to help you with this process.
Get Organized—Keep a Divorce Calendar
Most divorces are not quick. During this process you will make a lot of decisions under an immense amount of stress. Often when we are stressed, we don’t make the best decisions or even remember details of the decisions we are making.
Take time to get organized so you can relieve some of the stress involved. Below are some tips that can help with this.
Create a divorce calendar. This calendar is used to document everything with your soon-to-be ex-spouse. It can also be used throughout the tenure of the co-parenting relationship as you need it. This can also be used as evidence in court.
The divorce calendar should include items such as:
If your soon-to-be ex-spouse consistently runs late, cancels, or does
