    January- Obey Your Parents

Children, obey your parents in the Lord for this is right

    Ephesians 6:1 NKJV

The stars sprinkled over the village of Wood Grove, and the full moon beamed across the snow-covered ground. Snowmen the children had made earlier stood in the yards as of sentries guarding the neighborhood. All was quiet in Wood Grove as everyone settled down for the night—everyone, that is, except for Officer Badger, who patrolled the village during the evening.

Wood Grove was a pleasant little village with a woodland stream running right through the middle. There were two log bridges surrounding the stream at the upper and lower ends of the town. The village was dotted with neat and tidy homes, each one containing a different animal family.

Everyone knew each other well. Even though many families were different from each other, they treated each other the same as they would their own family. The village of Wood Grove was peaceful and comfortable for all who lived there. To keep their little village peaceful, they had a local officer who would patrol the surrounding area at night to make sure there were no intruders in Wood Grove. One would never know who would come in to disrupt the quiet village, and Officer Badger was good at keeping everyone in their village safe.

Officer Badger strolled by the home of the Gray Squirrel family, who lived along the pebble path near the upper log bridge. Next door lived the Chipmunks, and across the pebble path from them was the Red Squirrel family.

Officer Badger inspected one end of the village then he slowly made his way toward the lower log bridge, where the Muskrats lived. The moon glowed so brightly Officer Badger turned off his flashlight for a few minutes to enjoy the silhouette of Wood Gove.

What a wonderful night to be out, he thought to himself. He noticed how beautifully the moonlight trickled upon the steam as it flowed toward him then underneath the wooden bridge. He turned his flashlight on again as he ambled over across the bridge. He continued his duties, trampling through the soft snow by the school, and then on through the rest of the village. Everyone in Wood Grove felt safe knowing Officer Badger was on duty.

Meanwhile, in the home of the Bunny Ears family, Papa Bunny Ears, who was the pastor of Wood Grove’s cottage church, sat in his big stuffed chair next to the fireplace. The glow of the fire danced across the pages of the Bible as he read. Andy and his little sister Letty were curled up in their pajamas, one on each side of Mama Bunny Ears on the couch, listening quietly to their papa.

And, children, Papa Bunny Ears explained, the Lord promises that if you obey your parents you will live a long life on Earth.

Little Letty, not understanding, tipped her head to her left side as her ear flopped down upon her shoulder and asked, Does this mean we will live forever?

Papa Bunny Ears chuckled. No, not exactly. We don’t live forever here on Earth, but we will live forever in heaven if we ask the Lord to be our Savior.

There are lots of promises in the Bible, Mama Bunny ears clarified. But we have to do our part. Obeying the Lord and your parents will help keep you safe and out of trouble.

Suddenly, Letty heard a growl. What was that? she asked very curiously, and huddled closer to her mama.

My stomach. Andy groaned. I am still hungry.

After all the dinner you had eaten, and everyone else’s leftovers? Papa Bunny Ears laughed heartily.

Mama Bunny Ears turned to her son and gently reminded Andy, You had plenty of food to hold you till morning. Letty and I will go to the market tomorrow while you are in school and gather more food for the pantry.

Letty Bunny Ears’s face lit up, and she suggested, Mama, the Raccoon family has vegetables in the root cellar by the greenhouse. They wouldn’t mind if we went and borrowed some until tomorrow.

Please, Mama, Andy pleaded. I am still hungry!

Letty, I know you care about your brother, Papa Bunny Ears warned. But taking from others without asking is not obeying the Lord. We need to say our prayers and then hop into bed. Morning comes soon enough, and you can eat then.

Papa and Mama Bunny Ears tucked Andy and Letty into bed, gave them each a kiss good night, and then strolled to bed themselves.

Andy lay awake in his bed. He decided to sing softly to drown out the growl of his stomach, and he hoped it would help him sleep,
