America The Beautiful: Our Vanishing Heritage; Why Our Hallowed Faith Matters
()
About this ebook
America is a nation among the nations, strictly founded on faith. The role of Christianity in developing a civilization and culture deeply rooted and intricately intertwined with the Christian faith and doctrines is unquestionable. The Bible is for the government of the people, by the people, and for the people. (John Wycliffe) America was not born on one day. At the appointed time God conceived her and delivered her with much labor pain to the Founding Fathers, but with a repentant people, we shall be born anew, instantly. America's heritage and history are not for sale nor to be rewritten by generations who do not know the history nor interested in preserving history. We are exclusive in heritage, culture, and civilization rooted and built in Christ, but we are inclusive of all, the rich and the poor, the weak and strong, and multiethnic heritage of the land. Poor in the nation are the responsibility of the rich and the State. In America, the Beautiful: Our Vanishing Heritage, Dr. Cherian concludes, "America is the lit candle set in the West, a lighthouse for the world when deep darkness covers, and fear grips us." Let not vanishing faith and dishonesty destroy America.

About the Book and the Style
I spend most of my time reading the Holy Bible, scientific revelations, daily events and linking them with biblical truths and prophecies. I am fascinated to relate scientific breakthroughs and world events that unravel daily, with the scriptures written millennia ago. I have a different writing style, which mostly parallels the old-time classic biblical writers like Charles Spurgeon, D. L. Moody, or Jonathan Edwards, who spoke and wrote the Word of God without blemishing them with self-interest or whitewashing the truth. Moreover, since most present generation do not find time to read and explore the wealth of information and the gems in the scriptures, I am morally compelled to quote relevant biblical verses as I write. On the one hand, it helps the readers to understand the concept without having a Bible handy, and on the other, it may be helpful to capture the truth of the point in relation to the scriptures that may change the perception of the readers. Verses and facts may open the eyes of some in wonder and amazement of the wealth of knowledge hidden in the Bible for a life-changing effect. In a culture of vanishing truth, when honesty is replaced by dishonesty, sincerity by hypocrisy, when the culture negates God, salvation, and eternal life—it is highly challenging to write on the biblical views on them. The silence of nation’s watchmen against unrighteousness and injustice is detrimental to the nation. When we are living in a culture when generations are confused about truth, because of a delusion (2 Thess. 2:10–12), truth must be revealed, and shall prevail.

Synopsis of the Book
In a systematic manner, the author describes the greatness of the United States of America, which is our faith on which the nation is founded. America, the greatest nation on earth, was not founded on secular faith, but a unique faith on the foundation of Jesus Christ, the Rock of Horeb. The laws that God established for the universe on which the universe gyrates is set permanently until the end of the ages. Similarly, at Mount Sinai God gave his people the laws and guidelines for right living to form a holy nation in whichever geographic boundaries he placed humanity, and those laws are universal for the human race. America’s past greatness is in her faith, and a right faith. Our nation is chartered to carry out the sole function of knowing God, living and administering by the will of God, and propagating the Gospel message throughout the land and the rest of the world. America’s faith is rooted in the Judeo-Christian faith.
However, multiculturalism, secularism, the rise of humanism, and lack of interest in the biblical records of the origin of Christianity and the Western civilizations, later generations, the immigrants, and the new wave of politicians seem to have no respect for Godly principles on which our nation should be governed. As a result of partisan politics, our nation is being divided, and fear has gripped the common mass. The author affirms that our nation’s motto is "In God we trust," but degeneracy of faith may destroy any nation. Our nation must have a spiritual revival as in the past, lest the vanishing truth and the seared conscience destroy our civilization and prestige in the world. God set America on the westernmost part of the earth to be a lit candle, a lighthouse for the world, when darkness covers the earth. America is a light set on the shining hill to guide the rest of the world. The seventeen chapters of the book are interposed with biblical verses to substantiate our historical origin, God’s plan, and our need for dependence on the Almighty God to revive and sustain the United States.
Preface
America’s polarization by the two political parties have reached the cliff of the mountain peak of instability and is in a state of cliff hanging, and unless we find strength to rescue the nation and depolarize the situation, it would be a serious mistake on our part. There has been a serious report by the prestigious Telegraph that US plummets down global peace ranking due to political instability, published in June 2017.¹ The data is supplied by the Institute for Economic and Peace, headquartered in Sydney, Australia, with branches in New York, the Hague, Brussels, and Mexico. Its mission is to help create a world that is more peaceful and fulfilling for the majority of people on planet earth. On a measure of 0–1.7 to 0–2.6 and above, America’s score falls between 2–2.3. Lower the score indicates more peaceful nations that are the European nations, Australia, New Zealand, and Iceland. According to the Institute of Economic and Peace, America is 114 on the list out of the 163 independent states and territories, ranked in the report, and down 11 rungs from 2015. The main cause for our decline in the list of nations of peacefulness is political polarization, which is a true fact.
There may have been others who are conscious of the moral decline and the downward trend of our culture and civilization due to political polarization and anti-Christian attitude. But they may have written from a sociopolitical concern for the good of the country. Some others may have written because of their party loyalty, finding fault with the Republican administration or the Democratic administration and their leaders, their ideologies, and views based on their personal inclination to either party as the case may be. But no one has yet analyzed the true cause of our polarization that brought us to political instability, defamation, and plummeting from the level of peace and serenity we enjoyed and destined to be enjoying. I intend to explain the reasons from a theological and spiritual dimension in this book.
In my analysis, our two-party system started the polarizing effect by the 2000 general election, when after a long political battle over voting irregularity, improperness, ballot fraud, and the infamous hanging chads,
the United States Supreme Court handed over the presidency to the Republican Party by a 5–4 vote. Before we find fault with and chastise others who point out vulnerability, we must analyze who we are, and why we are Americans, and who gave us this land of ours. In the following pages, I have categorically explained from a theological and spiritual side that the United States of America is a nation the Almighty God founded as a new nation, as the New World, although the land existed from the very first day when God created the earth on day 3. The landmass known as North America remained from the day of creation, and anthropological evidences indicate that it was inhabited by people by 15,000 BC, living in savage culture. By using the word savage, I do not mean the Native Indian people who inhabited North America were violent and ferocious, but they had harsh life, with stealthy skills for a life depended primarily on hunting, and they actually tilled, manipulated, and cultivated the land for their survival. They have made several contributions to the land long before the European settlers came into the New World with the arrival of the pilgrims.
However, the point here is our declining standing in the world and the frightening condition of instability of the world caused by weakening of the leadership of America, due to political polarization and partisan politics. We must not find fault with news media and prestigious institutions pointing out some negative aspects of our political systems, the cause of polarity, and the turbulences we experience in the nation. In fact, we must see the positive element in it and rectify our mistakes and change the course of the nation. The Bible is full of chastisement of the nation of ancient Israel as well as their enemies, and the scathing words were given directly by God, his angels, prophets, and the apostles of the New Testament Period. Such not-so-pleasant words to the ears from the Bible are quoted in this book in several chapters. They are not my words but God’s, and I am not at liberty to change their tones.
While we are a Christian nation but operating on a secular principle, our nation’s life and trajectory have shifted more to party ideology and loyalty than principles guided by godly principles. The present generation of politicians of both parties are driven by the canon of political correctness, which is truly a cannon of destruction of moral and spiritual power. Secularism and political correctness have clogged our spiritual arteries that supply God’s principles to our vital organs that strengthen us to make reasoning and moral judgment in a godly manner, not soaked in the ideology of partisan politics. How do we achieve this?
I am sure while the three branches of our government—the executive, legislative, and judicial systems—are operated on a secular basis, a good majority of personnel in these three branches whom I call the watchmen of our nation,
are Christians, as are the general populace. Christianity is the most adhered religion of the United States with 75% professing as Christians. This is down from 85% in 1990, lower than 81.6% in 2001, and lower than 78% in 2012.², ³, ⁴, ⁵ According to Pews Research Center, the number of Americans who do not identify with any religion continues to grow at a rapid pace. One-fifth of the US public, and a third of adults under thirty, are religiously unaffiliated today, the highest percentages ever in Pew Research Center survey. Thus there is a growing tendency of declining Christian population and thus declining moral values defined by biblical doctrines. I do not imply here other religions do not have moral values or principles. No! The point is, America is founded on Christians principles and our moral values have changed and changing drastically because of disavowing and denying God from our culture. All other religions believe in God, as they understand him, and they have values and principles, but the Christian character, culture, and values are certainly different, and we are getting drowned in secularism. Many in the present generations born since 1960s when the uprising began are less and less dependent on God, his influence, and his power. This is certainly reflected in the individuals, leaders, and our nation in their dialogue, overindulgence on party ideology, and loyalty above God and his country. We should be supportive and loyal to the party, but our moral compass should not vacillate due to party loyalty. United States is a country of God for the reasons explained in the chapters following.
It is not time yet to give up. America has lot more faithful people than the number of political stalwarts who act strictly on party line in every sphere of our administrations at the local, state, and federal levels, and it is because of their prayers and faith that our Union stands undivided. The remedy for present political quagmire cannot be solved by any political pundits, gurus, or sage other than God himself who spoke to us through his Word, angels, and prophets and Christ himself who was born to live among us as Immanuel. Ancient Israel had the same problem as we face today. One of the powerful, very religious, influential and pious leaders, who meticulously observed all the laws of Torah, was anxious about the teachings of Jesus and sneaked out of the Sanhedrin and approached Jesus in the cool and shade of the night. He came by night not because he wanted to avoid being seen by others Jewish leaders, but perhaps it was the most convenient time for him being a ruler for an undisturbed and personal interaction with Jesus to seek answers to some pressing spiritual matters. It was Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. He told Jesus that what he heard about him, and the things he did, no one could do, because, We know that You are a teacher come from God; for no one else can do these signs that you do unless God is with him
(John 3:3). Without entertaining much further discussion, Jesus replied, Most assuredly I tell you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God
(John 3:4).
On hearing the phrase, "born again Nicodemus could comprehend only the natural physical birth of a child and astonishingly asked Jesus,
How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born? During the dialogue, Nicodemus further asked,
How can this be? I am sure Jesus was marveled at the lack of perception of Nicodemus, a learned teacher of the Law, about new birth,
born again, as Jesus asked him astonishingly,
Are you the teacher of Israel, and do not know these things" (John 3:10). Jesus explained to him that new birth happens not by entering the womb of one’s mother, but by water and the Spirit. It is a work of the Holy Spirit and must come from above.
We, as a nation, must be born again. While I am not asking every administration, every personnel, the State Houses, the Congress, or every corporation and their employees to undergo the "born-again" experience as Jesus explained, we all can understand the principle behind the statement to have our dialogue and decision-making, in a godly way as pattern of the kingdom of heaven. For those who are Christians in our political system, there is no harm in having a change of mind and nonpartisan attitude in policy-making dialogues on domestic, national, or international affairs—morally conscious dialogue without looking at the color, creed, ethnicity, or nationality of the inhabitants.
For Christians, a compete regeneration or new birth is the very basic need of salvation to be part of the kingdom of heaven. We must be very careful to claim that we are regenerated, because unfortunately, the statistics reveal there are many who feel they are, who in reality are not. The percentage of Christians who read Bible is less than 20%. In a fresh study of Bible engagement
released recently, Life Way Research surveyed more than 2,900 Protestant churchgoers and found that while 90% desire to please and honor Jesus in all I do,
only 19% personally read the Bible every day.⁶, ⁷ For this simple reason, I thought it necessary to incorporate relevant verses from the Bible in all the chapters. We must be assured that having a Christian name, born in a Christian family or a nation, does not make one a true Christian, unless he/she is born again
in the sum and substance of what Jesus told Nicodemus. New birth is a serious and mysterious matter that English vocabulary cannot describe; it is a divine and heavenly matter. Jesus compares the effect of new birth to that of the wind. The wind blows where it wishes, and we hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit
(John 3:8).
Jesus used the best example of wind for the effect of new birth from above. Wind is an essential part of the physical nature. Wind is needed for many useful purposes. Sometimes too-powerful winds can be destructive and devastating. Just like the physical wind is invisible, the wind from above is also invisible, but the wind of Spirit is not destructive. The wind of heaven is not bound by or limited to one ethnicity, and it does not limit to age, sex, color, or nation of origin.
If the physical formation and birth of a human baby is a mystery, the spiritual birth conferring newness is far more mysterious. Spiritual transformation confers a complete change in our thinking, attitude, behavior, choice of words, consideration of the views of others—free from stubbornness and the willingness to accept and integrate others’ views. This is how we evolve into nonpartisanship. Life is so elusive, and no science has ever understood it as to where it comes from and wither it goes. I have written two books explaining in my limited knowledge of science and theology where it comes from, and where it will end up.⁸, ⁹
New birth is not accomplished by a surgical procedure, just as many people spend large sums for a face-lift by plastic surgery. Holy Spirit does not do plastic surgery but transforms our mind, setting from what have been to what we should and ought to be. The begetting of new birth is an invisible process, but its effects are very visible from the moment we allow that change to happen. If we may accept this principle and behave, our nation will regain its reputation she had, and all nations will respect us and follow suit. Leadership demands action. Nicodemus was convinced of this and went from Jesus before the dawn as a newborn babe. What evidence we have for this? When Jesus’s body hung on the cross, a friend of Nicodemus, another powerful member of the Sanhedrin, went to Pilate and asked for permission to take the body for a Jewish burial. Nicodemus bought a mixture of aloe and myrrh, about hundred pounds at a high cost, and they buried Jesus. This is the effect of the heavenly wind that comes and stays with us. The work of the Holy Spirit is miraculous, and his power is beyond and above the natural wind. Transformed life empowers us to seek the guidance of the Lord daily.
America must have true faith, and our nation must be ruled by guidance of the Holy Spirit. Faith is the wheel that moves our nation, and the Holy Spirit must oil the wheels to remove the rust for a smooth ride swiftly to reach our destination. If our nation is losing respect around our peers, it is the lack of faith, by which the nation’s wheels are stuck and dragging. Without reintroducing faith, we shall neither have the inclination nor the power to do anything that is useful to the nation and pleasing to God.
If our political system can transform, and our politicians can transform themselves, our nation has the best future ahead. We must know the difference between washing the corpse before burial and bringing it back to life again. Any mortician can do the former, but Christ alone can do the latter. And only those who transformed by new birth will become eternally alive. Are our political leaders mere morticians, or truly interested in transforming the lives of the people and the nation by standing for truth, honesty, and enacting laws above partisan politics, and upholding the Constitution of the United States? Leading and ruling in truth and honesty are the core of the moral fiber of American democracy. Every hypocritical action and thought will be brought to light on the judgment day, for those who believe in that day.
The consolation is that the majority of America’s common mass is decent, honest, and God-fearing.
Righteousness makes a nation great; sin is a disgrace to any nation (Prov. 14:34). With the question Are we a righteous nation?
I submit this book to the general public. America and Americans first belong to God, irrespective of their political affiliations. There are hundreds of verses in the Bible that when we deny God, deviate from his principles and guidelines, destruction will loom over every nation. But we are a Christian nation to uphold the truth and must be transformed to keep our Union a Republic, a Christian nation, indivisible under God, to be blessed and be a blessing to other nations!
Chapter 1
Introduction
It is not by luck or chance that America became the most magnificent, most benevolent, and most powerful nation on earth. God in his great providence foresaw that this is the New Land he organized as the greatest democratic republic and set on the westernmost point of planet earth. After apportioning all the land, nations, and ethnicity with their cultures and geographic demarcation of the land were made in the whole earth, God set this great land which came to be called the United States of America as the westernmost nation for specific purpose. As God set the physical laws for the solar system and the planets around it, all inhabitants on earth sees the sun rises in the east and sets in the west as God set the planetary rotation of the earth on its axis. During the summer in the southern hemisphere, the sun appears to move overhead, while in the winter it appears to be closer to the northern hemisphere. Actually, sun is not moving as we think. The technological advancement of the twentieth century has helped us to know much more than in the past about astrophysics and astronomy, and now we know that the sun appears to be revolving around us not only because the earth orbits the sun but also rotates on its axis, giving us the notion that the sun passes through the sky. When the sun sets in the west, as the earth rotates for a full twelve hours, we in the northern hemisphere experience evening and darkness befall on us. God set America on the westernmost point on the planet earth not to be a nation set to sink in darkness but to be a shining light set on a hill to be the light to the rest of the world as darkness befall them.
While many people have different views about the purpose of America in the West, my view is based on the biblical view of America’s position and leadership in the world. While the rest of the world, even the very same land in the Middle East where God himself searched out a nation from where the Gospel moved to the nations around the Mediterranean, God foresaw that in many of those early places Gospel would be rejected, but God also foresaw that neither the door for the eternal Gospel should be closed nor the whole world should be sleeping in perpetual darkness. America is God’s final land with a final glow of light, still lit as the glimmer of hope for the people who are still in darkness about truth, justice, fairness, righteousness, compassion, love, and impartiality to all people who have gathered in the land for freedom to love the Lord God and worship him freely.
America is not a nation selected to exercise and claim superiority over other nations, yet God blessed us to be the most powerful nation on earth. God blessed America to be the richest nation among the civilized world who upholds Jesus Christ as the Lord and Savior. God blessed America to be the beacon of hope for all suffering people, and a light to the world, many areas of which are in darkness. God set America on the West to let justice roll like a river and righteousness like an ever flowing stream (Amos 5:24).
Many men of great talents, steadfast faith in God, devotion, and commitment have served our nation as presidents like George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, John Quincy Adams, and Abraham Lincoln. Some of their statements of faith are quoted in succeeding chapters appropriately. In the present culture, in the land that spread from coast to coast, many liberal generations would argue that America has been a secular country since its birth, contrary to the truth. It is my understanding as I examined the historicity of this great land, almost all the founding documents reveal that United States of America was founded on faith in Jesus Christ, and I am fully convinced that the majority of Founding Fathers believed and affirmed that the Gospel of Jesus Christ was the guiding light of this nation on which it was securely fastened once. Undoubtedly, biblical doctrines are the sure model for the Constitution of the United States and those of many of the states that formed the Union. The quotes from many of these great statesmen clearly attest to the fact that our nation’s trajectory as they charted the course of history was guided by steadfast faith. Many people, including historians and politicians, think only in terms of America a land of opportunity,
which is true. However, the ultimate truth is that America is a land of faith, and therefore we are
