Rocky was quite weary. He had been holding Grandpa Hess for most of the afternoon. Today was Sunday in the Hess home which meant dinner, and then settling down in the living room to watch the games. Being placed in front of the television was hard work. After dinner, he had known what was coming. If only Grandpa Hess wasn’t so heavy,
he thought. He was always relieved when the games were over. I do more than all the other chairs in the house. Let those other chairs do their stuff now,
he said to himself.
Old people and very young people usually liked rocking chairs a lot. The little people climbed up and rocked very hard. Rocky called them blur-riders
because they went so fast. They were reckless and sometimes bumped his back against the wall. He was always fearful that his back would chip because the walls he bumped were made of hard plaster.
Old people were a problem, too. Number one, they were usually heavy. Number two, they usually sat for a long time and he didn’t get much chance to rest. Number three, old people loved to rock so they always picked Rocky.
Life seemed hard for him. Of course, he couldn’t complain because chairs never do. Sometimes life didn’t seem fair to him, either, but when he thought of how hard it was on the living room rug, he didn’t complain. The poor thing would really like to have been cleaned once in a while, but there was always someone walking on it with dirty shoes, especially in the winter.
It was good to rest. When
