About this ebook
Higgins advocates the introduction of a new international law, Ecocide: 'damage, destruction to or loss of ecosystems', as the 5th Crime Against Peace. This would hold to account heads of corporate bodies that are found guilty of damaging the environment; it would present corporations with a new choice: they could choose to be part of the solution, part of the salvation of the planet's future, by complying with the new law of Ecocide. The opportunity to implement this law represents a crossroads in the fate of humanity; we can accept the change, or we can continue to allow its destruction, risking future brutal war over disappearing natural resources.
This is the first book to explain that we all have a commanding voice and the power to call upon all our governments to change the existing rules of the game.
Higgins presents examples of laws in other countries which have succeeded in curtailing the power of governments, corporations and banks and made a quick and effective change, demonstrating that her proposal is not impossible. Eradicating Ecocide is a crash course on what laws work, what doesn't and what else is needed to prevent the imminent disaster of global collapse.
Eradicating Ecocide provides a comprehensive overview of what needs to be done in order to prevent ecocide. It is a book providing a template of a body of laws for all governments to implement, which applies equally to smaller communities and anyone who is involved in decision-making.
Polly Higgins
World-renowned barrister and author Polly Higgins proposed to the United Nations that ecocide be made a crime - to prohibit mass damage and destruction. She was voted one of the World’s Top 10 Visionary Thinkers, No. 35 in Salt Magazine’s Top 100 Inspiring Women of the World and dubbed The People’s Lawyer. Her story is a journey of facing something enormous and finding the keys and tools to unlock something even greater instead. Calling on leaders to step into their greatness, she realized that greatness begins with the self. A unique story, it is part self-learned, part self-unlearned. To break the cycles of harm playing out in the world, our ecocides, is to break the cycles of harm playing within ourselves. Polly was also the award-winning author of 'Eradicating Ecocide'. She passed away in April 2019 and her legacy is being continued by the Stop Ecocide group who are working at an international level to ratify the ecocide law in 2020 and by the work of Extinction Rebellion.

Reviews for Eradicating Ecocide
2 ratings1 review
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This book is so lacking in sensationalism: why can't EVERYONE see that an international law against ecocide (the wilful destruction of the environment for financial gain) is need - and quickly?Polly Higgins makes her case in layman's term (she was a lawyer). The book totally lacks those sensational claims that can so easily discredit climate action books: you know the kind of thing, "If we don't all abandon transport, houses and food IMMEDIATELY, the world will explode next Tuesday." Polly builds a series of nods of agreement until, the reader has committed to her cause.Polly, sadly, died in 2019 but others are taking up the challenge and this law will come into being. Let's just hope that it comes soon!
