Introduction
Welcome! I’m so glad you’re here.
For over a decade I have led meditation groups and shared recorded and live meditations online. I have witnessed the simple yet powerful magic that can be found within meditation and the healing this path can offer. Meditation can help us let go of stress and busy thoughts, it can also help us nurture and nourish ideas, intuition, empowerment, gratitude, calm and peace.
This book was born of a regularly-made request to create a book collection of the meditations that I have created over the many years of my teaching journey. Some of you may well have heard these meditations from me in my classes, via my YouTube channel or through meditation apps. The meditations I have gathered are predominantly guided visualisations, what I sometimes call ‘story journeys’.
You will see through these meditations my own personal areas of passion and specialism – goddesses, folklore and myth – as strong themes. I have been inspired by all manner of deities, places and people. You’ll find meditations for many occasions, for group or personal work, seasons, times of day, nature and the elements, various deities, and simply some of my personal favourites. Some are short and sweet introductions to your day, whilst others invite you to take longer journeys into the realms of intuition, deep knowing and the subconscious.
The Magic of Meditation
Magic teaches us that things that seem to be impossible can become possible. Things that have become separated, blocked or broken, like people and energy, can be re-joined. We can find the light, find space and empty cauldrons can be refilled with time and love.
I wrote these words for my second book, Yin Magic, and I believe the exact same words apply to meditation as well.
There are so many reasons to meditate, not least the connection to a certain magic when we cultivate a regular meditation practice. Any time spent in stillness can be an opportunity for meditation and reflection, both on one’s self and the world. Great transformation can happen in these moments, like in a chrysalis, before something new and beautiful emerges. Every moment of stillness is an opportunity to learn and grow. Taking time to observe and notice your thoughts can help you nurture a more profound sense of presence and well-being. A regular meditation practice teaches you to be able to observe and accept any thoughts and emotions that arise without judgement.
In the story of yoga, the union that is yoga can only happen when the mind becomes quiet – which is essentially what meditation is. Mental stillness is found by bringing the body, mind and senses to calm, which, in turn, relaxes the nervous system. Meditation is used to focus the mind and enter a state of consciousness different from our daily awareness. Meditation can be used to contemplate something affecting us inwardly or outwardly. During this altered state of consciousness, you may feel you can contact your inner self or communicate with the Divine/Universe/Spirit.
While meditation is more commonly associated with yoga and Eastern religions, it is also a core part of magical practice. It is the starting point for other techniques and practices such as astral projection, prayer, manifestation, shamanism and ‘hedge riding’.
Meditation can be an addition to whatever healing modality you are using, a companion you can call on at any time: it is indeed a powerful magic.
Preparing for Meditation
○ Turn off your phone, the TV, and bright lights. Make sure you are warm and comfortable.
○ Bolsters, blocks, blankets and eye pillows can all be useful, but nothing is essential.
○ Incense, candles and gentle music can all help you create a space that feels special and sacred, a little removed from day-to-day life.
○ You may want to have a notebook and pen nearby before you begin, so that it is on hand if needed.
○ Give yourself time and space to settle physically and mentally at the beginning of the meditation. Do not rush this part of the process.
Guidance for Leading Groups in Meditation
○ Ensure you read through the meditation alone in preparation, checking the pronunciation of any unfamiliar words (you will find these in the footnotes).
○ Before starting the meditation, centre yourself, relax your body and ensure you are breathing deeply.
○ Allow your voice to transmit a sense of ease and calm. Remember the words you are reading are an aid to meditation, so find the balance between being clearly heard (especially if there is also music playing) and yet not dominating your students’ inner experience.
○ Take your time, give chances to pause and reflect at both the beginning and end of the meditation, and be sure to allow quiet moments to visualise if guided to do so.
○ As with retelling fairy tales over centuries, as you read aloud these stories, you become their carrier and they become your own! Do not worry about changing words: the energy and intention of the reading is what is most important.
○ You may want to use a singing bowl, bell or gentle chime to help signify when the meditation is coming to an end.
