THE RIGHT RESUME AND CURRICULUM VITAE - SAAD E ABBAS

    1 Resume Writing

    What is a Resume?

A Resume is another type of Curriculum Vitae (CV) that is used in North America, mainly the United States and Canada, and also some countries in Europe. The United Kingdom, on the other hand, focuses mainly on CVs.

How is a CV different from a Resume?

Curriculum Vitae (CV) has been called the intellectual Resume because they are used by Scholars, Scientists, and Doctors. You don’t have to be a Scientist or have a Ph.D. in chemistry to write a CV. In fact, now that you have a basic idea on how to write a Resume, you are almost ready to start writing your own CV.

When seeking a faculty, research or leadership position at an academic or scientific organisation, you will need a very special resume called Curriculum Vitae (Vita or CV for short). If you think that a CV is a formal document then you can relax, there is no reason to be nervous. Writing a CV is a very casual event because in this book you will learn the principles of how to write a Resume.

To create a CV, there are a few differences from creating a Resume. Here are some rules to write a CV:

•Most CVs are more than 2 pages. Can range from 10 to 50 pages.

•A CV is more detailed than a Resume; a CV includes very extensive information on presentations, publications, academic and work history.

•CVs do not normally contain job objective statements, but if you wish to include your job objectives statement it is all right.

The length of a CV can vary, a CV for a new Ph.D. graduate can range anywhere from 3 to 10 pages. But for a professor who has been teaching for the past 20 years, his CV can be 20 to 30 pages long. That is a lot of reading but in the academic world, they love to read. People in educational institutions live to read and for them, the slogan is "MORE IS LESS. This is the basic difference between a Resume that states LESS IS MORE" than a CV.

The people who read CVs are more interested in detailed information about your career. Academic institutions are not interested in marketing and career objective statements are considered as exaggerating the facts. Institutions of higher learning are more interested in what you have done and what you know, as this information will be used by you when you teach.

Information such as dates, references and exact titles are very important, this enables the institutions to verify the information
