Just the boring non-glamourous facts about me.I specialize in the fine art of communication between human beings.I focus on helping small businesses and rural communities promote themselves through targeted marketing and communication programs.I record video lectures that focus on human communicationI write books and articles that focus on how we can use technology to better communicate with one another.I am a student of history because I truly believe that we need to understand our history.I also know that the reality of history can often make some people uncomfortable.I write historical novels because I feel that is a way to talk about history without it being a lecture.I have lived a life of variety and as a result I have experienced the good and bad of life.I grew up in a Navy family, so I have been exposed to a wide variety of human beings.I enjoy inter-cultural and inter-generational interactions.I have served in the United States Coast Guard.I have been a radio disc jockey.I have been the pastor of a Cowboy Church.I have worked in technology as a computer programmer for over 40 years, yes I am old, and I know how to adapt.

    Introduction

Society and the world around us is constantly changing and many people are losing their ability to communicate with others. Recently it seems as if people are more interested in talking and yelling at each other rather than actually having a dialog. That is something that will hurt a family, an organization, a community, and indeed the whole of society.

Notice that the majority of times we see a help wanted advertisement, there’s a line that says, ‘Excellent verbal and written skills required.’ Why is that? It’s because employees of today’s modern businesses have to deal with people from all over the globe and in all age groups. This diversity in an organization’s circle of contacts means those who have the ability to communicate with others possess a singularly important skill. It is a skill that every one of us needs not only if we are employed, but also in our day-to-day lives.

How successful a relationship will be with family or friends is often dependent upon communications. If we are able to listen, understand, and provide feedback then others will seek to interact with us. Once we are able to express ourselves with clarity we have a distinct advantage over others.

This book is designed to give everyone the tools necessary so each of us can have that advantage. I’ve tried to break it down into logical sections and I talk in plain language. The art of communication is one that every person can master. I have started the book with the basics of communication, because if we’re building a house we don’t start with the walls we put in a foundation. I then talk about how we can communicate with those who are different. From there I examine why people sometimes don’t react the way we think they should. Then it’s a trip into the land of persuasion, and how we can go about changing another person’s attitude. There are times when persuasion might fail, and other measures are needed.

And since the world today seems to be filled with angry, cranky people who don’t want to cooperate but instead want to fight, I discuss the art of conflict management. Finally, I delve into a modern facet of communication and that is the world of social media.

Why should anyone care what I have to say about this? My life has been a series of jobs and adventures that allowed me to talk, to communicate with others. It’s one of the things I probably do best, and it’s also one of the things that I have to constantly work on. Not that I’ve forgotten how to communicate, after all, I estimate that over my career I have given well over 500 speeches and presentations. In college I was a national champion debater. I have worked
