    It happened that I met a very ancient man at a wedding, but to my surprise he wouldn’t tell me the tale of his life; however, a heavy fall of rain coming on as we passed out of the church after the bride and groom, we stayed a while to shelter in the porch, and I noticed that there were tears on his cheeks as he looked after the couple. I asked him if he had ever been married himself, and he said he had, once, and looked down at his left hand, which was very gnarled, but showed no band there. Since I had finally asked a conjuring question, he became talkative, and told me that he had been engaged as a young man, long ago, to a pretty enough girl.
