    I daresay you have never heard of the Cannibal Club, and indeed, it was never their intention to be known, though at the height of their fame they were celebrated enough. This union of man-eaters was first convened by one Judith, Lady Rockhart, and it was she who orchestrated all its affairs. Having been cruelly deceived in love at an early age, the lady made it her business to wreak revenge on all the male sex, by such stratagems of love-killing as she could devise to inflict the most heart-breaking wounds. She was armed in the war on men with the most fatal weapons, namely, beauty and money, and she utilised these attributes to the full in her tireless efforts in the cause of masculine ruination.
