Abide With Me - Eleonor A. Baker

    BESIDE ME

    Death gouged your eyes

    in an August afternoon

    when the scorching sun

    filled my head with sounds

and within those thoughts bees sang in chorus

    they began to dance

But where do you go when the dance becomes so frenzied?

    You have gone

leaving silence in someone else’s hands

while the pale green walls fell

    the silence became music

    clenched between the meninges

and the faces deformed by the insolence of the white ladies

    their smiles smeared with stupidity

Recumbent under the sky that lived only one day

    the dusky memory stirs

    Blind

    beside me

it leans on the searing sun and settles there

until the long tresses of the dawn carry it elsewhere

    where embraces wear cherry blossom

where memories no longer smell of solitude

    THE ROLL-CALL

    The timid are unaccounted for

and the world is left alone

They were told to cast aside instinct

    and to buy cheap brazenness

    It is sold everywhere nowadays

in the digital marketplaces and in the paper palaces

where self has been crushed into a thousand beads

    that roll with others

together with those of the global world

    which has lost its nose

    and with it

    its way

    Joy and nudity

    are unaccounted for

    That is
