    Corrupted Healer - E.L. Jones

    CHAPTER ONE

There was something about the night. It throbbed with the heartbeat of a monster lurking in the darkness. No one else could see it, not the men and women sitting in their cars and engrossed in the movie playing before them. Maybe if the people at the drive-in theater bothered to look closely at the deserted garage down the street, they would have noted the disturbance in the darkened place.

But he wasn’t here to be seen, was he? The monster was here for someone else, a gift to his people that would set him free forever. When the monster had been given the order, it had been clear – get the girl and the antidote is yours.

For more than fifty years, the monster had sought endlessly for the antidote. When he found that it was in the hands of his master, he begged for it. But the master didn’t want to give it to him without getting something in return. He had to please his master to be saved.

The monster took a step further while hundreds of feathers rustled quietly on his body. He didn’t want to wake them now, these beings clinging to his skin. He had to be patient. The movie would soon be over.

It had not been easy to get access to the girl. For some reason, it was like her memories didn’t exist. Anyone who knew about the other side – Shifters, Magicians, and the Dark Walkers – it was easy to track them down because of what they knew. But for weeks, he had felt nothing. He had scrambled in the darkness of her ignorance, waiting for a clue as to where she was. His master had given him little details, feeding him only the bones of incomplete information.

However, two days ago, someone had set his path straight. Whoever this person was had led him to her and they had been right!

As the credits at the end of the movie rolled, the monster saw people begin to back out of the theater. The screen went black and a fat guy climbed onto the stage, urging people to come back next week for another movie.

He set his eyes on the Ford where she was. The lady was still there. She had her head on a guy’s shoulder, having a conversation with him. From where he was, the monster could clearly hear them.

Amelia shouldn’t have died, the lady said to the man.

That’s the point of the movie. If she hadn’t died, Hector would never have found out he loved her, the man answered.

She lifted her head from his shoulder and sighed. What a sad way of finding out.

Come on, the man said, let’s go home.

Good! The monster needed them out of there. Right before his eyes, the Ford backed out of the theater and made for the street. He knew where they were headed; the Pyra Hotel several blocks from the theater. Grinning to himself, the monster retreated into the shadows, vanishing in a flash of flapping wings. It was time for Ghan, the monster, to take his target.

THE PYRA HOTEL WAS still open. Well, hotels weren’t meant to be closed at any time of the day, right?

Ghan appeared at the less illuminated side of the hotel just as the Ford crawled to a stop at the parking lot. The man and the woman stepped outside, laughing at something that appeared to amuse them. The doorman bowed politely as he pushed the door open and ushered them in. Ghan closed his eyes and listened to the conversation of the man and the woman again.

I booked us Room 5B, the man said.

    That’s great, replied the woman.

Hello, I need keys to room 5B, please. I paid earlier. The monster guessed the man was now talking to the receptionist.

Shuffling of papers, followed by the receptionist saying, Oh, you must be Mr. Nick Houston. I’ll get the keys for you now.

This was his moment. Ghan needed to make a move now. He came out from where he had been watching in the dark, letting the lights from the hotel cast their glow on his hideous look.

When the doorman saw him, he opened his mouth to scream but no sound came out. At that moment, his demons came to life, hundreds of vampire bats swirling around him while another hundred attacked the doorman. They threw him against the door, smashing the entrance just as the doorman fell to the floor dead! His body was covered in blood and the claws of his demons.

Ghan sent his army of bats into the hotel, gallantly walking behind them. Pyra was thrown into panic with most of their staff and guests racing for their lives.

Just as his target began to escape with Mr. Nick Houston, Ghan blocked her path with his bats, all of them flapping and squeaking in rage.

Lisa Avery, barked Ghan. You’re coming with me.

    CHAPTER TWO

Ayear ago, Lisa Avery had met Nick Houston at a fundraising party. The issue of mental health had found its way into the heart of a business tycoon who had just lost his daughter. He wanted the rest of the world to know depression was like cancer, eating deep into people’s will to live. It had consumed a lot of weak people, pushing them to commit suicide because that was their only way to live. So, the business tycoon had come up with a fundraising program to create awareness and support for people’s mental health.

Lisa had gone to the event as a speaker. She had practiced her speech all night, gone on stage to enlighten people about mental disease, and got the contacts of clients who needed therapy. However, Lisa had not been prepared to meet Nick Houston at the event. He was a tall handsome guy with hair that fell down his shoulders while his dark fierce eyes glinted with fascination as he approached her.

What a wonderful seminar, Nick had said.

Thank you, Lisa had answered, searching his face to note if she had seen him before.

Nick seemed to notice that. He extended a hand for a shake. I’m Nick Houston.

    Lisa Avery.

I came with my mom, Nick added. Then he pointed to a woman who was talking to one of the dignitaries who had come to the event.

Lisa’s eyes widened in shock. Nick’s mom was the last person she had ever thought of coming close to. The woman was her role model, one of the renowned women who had inspired her to be a therapist.

Do you want to say hi? Nick asked, a gleam dancing in his eyes.

    I...I don’t mind.

    Come with me.

Nick Houston led her to his mother. Diana Houston was more beautiful in person. Her dark hair was so sleek Lisa wanted to snake her fingers through it. A smile appeared on Diana’s ageless face when she sighted her son, pulling him to a hug.

    Hello, son.

Mom, said Nick. I would like you to meet Lisa Avery. The guy spoke as if he and Lisa were good friends. They had just met a few seconds ago.

Diana smiled at Lisa, embracing her too. You’re the speaker who talked about Postpartum Depression? I really loved your talk.

Thank you, Lisa appreciated, trying hard to remain calm. She couldn’t believe that she was standing in front of Diana. Not in a billion years would she have thought it was possible to meet the respected woman.

I think the seminar was incredible, added Nick.

Yes, it was, Diana said and glanced at her wristwatch. Oh, dear. I have to be at the office right now. Something came up. I’ll see you at home, Nick. Nice to meet you again, Lisa.

Then the woman walked away, flanked on both sides by her bodyguards. Lisa had been hoping to have a discussion with her tonight as there were so many things she wanted to analyze with the woman. But the chance was no more. This was probably the last time she would meet Diana Houston. Her son, Nick, had probably walked up to her only to tell her about how great her seminar was.

If you don’t mind, Miss Avery, said Nick. I would like to take you out to dinner tomorrow night.

Lisa couldn’t believe her ears. Was the son of Diana Houston asking her out?

I don’t mind, she hurriedly answered. Not at all.

It was the start of their relationship. Nick continued to see her every single day, creating time to call her at night, too. He was so real with her that Lisa didn’t take time to fall in love with him.

However, their relationship was far from what she expected. Lisa soon came to understand Nick’s relationship with his mom was broken. They only acted for the camera but behind closed doors lived like cats and dogs. Lisa rarely saw the woman. Diana didn’t
