    The Unwanted - E.L. Jones

    CHAPTER ONE

The lone figure followed the couple before him as they went into the apartment across the street with them unaware of his presence.

It was half-past two in the morning. The dim light of the moon did nothing to lighten up the street, only the streetlight overhead did. Not that it helped anyone see him, as he was a master at what he did.

But the lone figure wasn’t a man of light. He embraced the darkness because that was who he was, a man made to live in the shadows. He was a man who moved with the wind, a man who did his jobs swiftly and silently. This lone figure was called The Outcast.

Not even his target tonight could sense him. No one from his species could note his presence. He was one of them, and at the same time, not like them. It was what made him different and why they called him that name. Tonight, The Outcast had a job and he wasn’t going to let down his hirer.

He watched the couple as they unlocked the door and stepped inside, shutting and locking the front door behind them. He could sense the red-haired woman as she walked into a room and turned the lights off. He could see her without trying hard to. Not only was The Outcast’s eyes were trained for the dark, but he had other senses that helped him to feel where people were. He could sense the tiniest object in a room enveloped in sheer darkness.

However, The Outcast wasn’t here for the woman. He was here for her man, the individual who was still in the sitting room. The Outcast made for the front door and stood for a seconds before kicking it down.

What the… His target began but before he could finish his statement, The Outcast charged at him with blinding speed. They tumbled into a shelf, smashing the furniture into bits. The Outcast pinned his target to the ground. Stay down, Clint. You are under arrest by the Sixteenth Region for breaching the laws of the Shifter’s Curse.

    The Outcast, Clint hissed.

In a matter of seconds, The Outcast felt the man’s form change under him. He was no longer holding a man but a lanky werewolf with fangs that snarled at him. Clint grabbed The Outcast by the throat, slamming him into the ceiling. The house rocked, raining a truckload of ceiling dust on these men. As The Outcast fell, Clint grabbed him again, flinging him into an opposite wall. The Outcast broke through the wall, landing on the asphalt outside.

A shriek filled the air, causing The Outcast to grunt in frustration. The red-haired woman was reacting to the fight though she still couldn’t see anything that was happening.

Stay back, honey, Clint, in a wolf form, spoke with a husky voice. They are here for me.

Does she know? The Outcast said, rising to his feet. He dusted the dirt from his clothes, not a single scratch on his body. That you’re the reason she can’t have a child?

Keep quiet and fight me, Outcast! Clint growled.

But the red-haired woman was silent. She had heard what the Outcast had said. Clint. What’s he talking about?

He doesn’t know what he’s saying. Go back inside, I’ll handle this.

The Outcast chuckled. You can’t have kids because werewolves have been cursed not to mate with humans. It’s the Shifter’s Curse, but Clint has been lying to you, all this time.

    Shut the hell up!

Clint dashed again but The Outcast was ready. He moved sideways just as Clint reached him, causing Clint to ram his body into the vehicle of the neighbor who lived across them. The Outcast could hear most of the residents of the community on phone calls, trying to call the police. Some had their cameras out to record the scene.

But it wasn’t going to last long. The Outcast knew the Sixteenth Region would stop the cops from interfering, have all videos of the fight erased, and then brainwash humans into thinking they had seen nothing.

The Outcast was only out to get Clint today. He cracked his neck and began to transform. But unlike Clint, The Outcast wasn’t a full wolf. He could only grow out his fangs and claws. Nothing else. The Outcast didn’t have furs like the others. He had their strength, their killer looks, their ability to sense others, and their nocturnal minds but he wasn’t a true Shifter.

Surrender yourself, Clint, or I’ll have to arrest you forcefully.

Clint spat to the ground. Over my Shifter body!

As always. Slashing his sharp claws into the air, The Outcast attacked.

    CHAPTER TWO

The middle-aged man in front of her sat on the couch with a straight face. Lisa Avery had interacted with a lot of cold and insensitive humans. If this man had any chance of being changed, she knew it would take a while.

Lisa waited patiently for his response, tapping her left shoe on the carpet. It hardly made a noise but the silence in the room was too profound as she could also hear her heartbeat.

    One minute. Two minutes.

Mr. Bloom? Lisa called his name. Are you going to tell me something?

Victor Bloom ran a finger through his brown hair and didn’t glance at her. His eyes were fixed on her desk instead as if he was interested in something on it than in telling her about his relationship with his wife.

How long have you been a therapist?

Lisa sighed. This troubled artiste was evading her question. She wanted to give a retort, something like ‘the very day you started hitting your wife’ but knew it could trigger Victor’s rage. The last thing she wanted to see was him storming out of the office.

Five years, Lisa responded. But it’s not important…

How long has my wife been seeing you?

Lisa shook her head. I can’t talk about that. There is therapist-patient confidentiality. Just like this session. Mr. Bloom, no one is going to know I had this session with you.

Lisa needed to assure him of that. Most celebrities were protective of their reputation. If Victor’s fans found out their ever-beloved musician was seeing a shrink, they could consider him a lunatic. If only a lot of people knew that seeing a therapist didn’t automatically mean being mad.

Victor sighed. I can’t do this. When I walked in here, I thought I could. I wanted to do it for the kids. But…

Mr. Bloom, you need to consider the mental health of your kids. I know your wife must have hurt you a lot but hitting her in front of your children…

She fucking sleeps around! Are expecting me to fold my arms and do nothing?

Lisa leaned forward. I’m glad you’re already speaking out. Now, Mr. Bloom, it’s important…

The musician interrupted her again. Damn you shrinks!

Victor Bloom got on his feet, heaving like a bull ready to charge at something or someone in its path. He was formidably tall, flashing thick muscles gotten from endless days at the gym. But his physique didn’t make Victor who he was today. It was his voice, boasting of an amazing sonorous pitch that made him the best in his profession.

If only Victor Bloom could be committed to his therapy session like he was committed to the gym. This was the first time he would be seeing Lisa, two weeks after his wife paid a huge amount for his sessions.

The poor woman wanted him saved. Sometimes, Lisa saw her job as a complete waste of time. She considered it unrealistic at frustrating times and had to restrain herself from quitting.

Can humans change? Can she make a person different from the monster that they truly are? Though some of her clients had healed and moved on with their new lives, Lisa had her moments of failure. A particular failure clung to her, transforming her into a clown who was preaching solutions to others but not to herself.

    Mr. Bloom.

Victor took his seat. Go on.

Bipolar Disorder. Lisa’s first diagnosis for his actions and she had been right all along.

As she opened her mouth to speak, her phone buzzed on the desk beside her. It was a message from Nick Houston.

*Dinner at my mom’s place by eight. Don’t be late! *

It was already past six. Victor had taken more of her time than she had expected. Sadly, more like relief, it was time to end this session.

Lisa had other things to do than trying to coerce a celebrity into talking. Though she cared a lot about Mrs. Bloom and wanted to see a change in her relationship, in the end, Lisa knew Victor would have to be punished for the domestic violence. All she needed was to convince the woman that her husband was a beast she couldn’t change. He should be locked up instead, several miles away in a place where he would never be able to touch her again.

But for today, Lisa had a woman to impress. Nick Houston’s mother was a woman of exemplary character, a human rights activist who has been able to change the lives of many people. Lisa saw herself in that woman – someone who was strong, confident,
