    CHAPTER 1

    DECEMBER, 1989

Pietro Romano nearly sliced his thumb off when she walked in the door.

He’d been hard at work slicing carrots on a diagonal, exactly three-quarters inch thick, in preparation for the antipasto platter that was on special tonight. He’d been in the groove, totally focused, determined to prove he could put together the best special they’d had all week.

The sous chef, some Armenian punk named Samvel, had been canned recently, and Pietro wanted his position. Even if the rumors about why he was fired were a little, well, off-putting.

The other kitchen staff whispered that it was mob related.

Whatever. Even though he was a hundred percent Italian and a buff guy who lived in a city known for its mob roots, Pietro wasn’t into that stuff. Yeah, it supposedly paid a hella lot better than working in the kitchen in an Italian restaurant, but he’d been raised to believe that anyone associated with the mafia automatically deserved a one-way ticket to burn in hell for all of eternity.

The Purple Rain soundtrack was playing from Luigi’s boom box for the third time already today. Pietro needed to bring in some of his rock ’n roll cassettes and swap out what apparently was the only tape Luigi owned.

And then he heard a tinkling laugh. Definitely a girl, and not a giggle he recognized. He’d been working at Giuseppe’s Italian Kitchen for three months now, and he knew all the waitresses. He knew their laughs, giggles, snorts. Not that he honestly paid that much attention to detail; it was more that they were all into him, so they were forever hanging out in the kitchen, trying to draw his attention. At least until Giuseppe showed up and shouted at them to leave his cooks alone.

So, yeah, this one caught his attention because it was different from any he’d heard before. And then she said, I know Luigi’s working tonight, cuz no one else loves this soundtrack more than him.

Pietro chuckled to himself and glanced over his shoulder to see who felt the same way he did.

That was when he damn near sliced off his thumb.

Because, holy hell, this chick was fine. A total Betty.

Long, curly, dark hair pulled into a ponytail. Big, brown eyes. Pouty lips, although they were smiling at the moment. High, plump cheekbones.

She wore a black T-shirt under a jean jacket, even though it was December and cold as hell outside, and a pair of acid-washed jeans with almost painfully white Keds on her feet. Unless she changed into them just outside the door, he could not imagine how she’d gotten across the slush-caked parking lot with that perfect whiteness intact.

He released the knife so quickly, it clattered to the cutting board and slipped over the side onto the stainless steel countertop with an echoing crash that drew everyone’s attention his way.

    Including the fly girl.

Quickly wiping his hands on his apron, he hurried over and introduced himself before any of these other dips could beat him to the punch.

Hey there. I’m Pietro. Pietro Romano.

Those beautiful eyes danced as she slipped her hand into his and said, Nice to meet you, Pietro. I’m Aida.

Aida. I like that name. Hella pretty.

She chuckled while someone else made barfing noises.

Yo, man, stop fawning over her. You’re gonna get in trouble.

Oh, stop it, Luigi, Aida called out. I don’t mind.

You aren’t who I’m worried about, Luigi replied.

Pietro stabbed his thumb over his shoulder. He’s right. I should probably get back to work. He eyed the restaurant’s logo screen-printed on the shirt above her left breast. You work here? How come I’ve never seen you before?

    "Probably because
