Life Skills Every Teen Should Master - Karen Blake
Let’s do the pep talk first
Hey, you, yes you: Got you a ride - do you like rides? Because this journey is set to be a beautiful one. And yes, you can feel the air on your face, come on in.
That time is coming or about come. Do you know the time I’m talking about? It’s going to come crawling soon and it draws nigh. The times of life that you solely desire, you experience your independence in a glimpse. Great that you now know, or should I give a hint? It’s the time when you leave home, away from your parents for a while, away from your environment, away from the things and people you are so familiar with. It’s a call to live on another level. That thought of leaving home can be overwhelming. Trust me, I totally understand. Have you ever wondered how life would be miles away from home? How would you survive away from mom, dad, and any siblings? Are there questions running through your mind on how to take on your new journey?
We all get to make this decision at a point and sometimes it comes naturally as a leap in life. It is an entirely different show away from home, from family, and most especially it’s life away from the environment that you are used to. It takes a lot to adjust. Have you been thinking about college life? As a growing teenager and youth, you are eager to take on life and you can’t wait for the next stop. Life has its tests, assignments, and requirements, just as you learn to do your dishes and clean up after you eat, just as you learn to make your bed and do your homework. As you progress, you will encounter these obstacles, which you must overcome. You can either rise above them or continue to try to figure it out. Certain skills are required, but there isn't much discussion about them, so we'll make some real noise about them in this book. By the time you're finished reading, you'll be so glad you made the decision to get this ‘how to’ guide.
It wouldn't be nice to just dive into life without the necessary skills, would it? Or you go to college trying to figure out life and trying to fit in when you should be living your best life. We grow up learning things daily, but we overlook more important skills. What do you think? You are not taught in class how to make decisions, how to style your hair, when to say no, what meal to eat, and how to be financially responsible; you are not taught how to live comfortably; you are only taught how to be educated, how to learn the basics. Life has its own set of skills that you cannot do without. There are tools to make use of on this journey of life, the ones you need to live life well and be glad that you did.
Our actions are a result of what we have learned over time. Being that wonderful and successful grown-up, you desire to become doesn’t just happen to you. There’s a lot to learn and be learned. We want to be great and make the most of our lives, but we can do that by just applying what we have learned in school. Life has its skillsets. As you go on, life would meet you at a midpoint, and you need skills to manage life effectively. These skills affect the rest of your life. To lead a better life, you need to know certain things and apply them skilfully in your life. Very impactful people understand that life skills are important.
Sometimes in our lives, always at the brink of it, there’s this eagerness to leave home. Certainly, you can write off your excitement, but you can’t leave without the right info or tools because soon enough, you’d understand how life’s looking at you in the face and you have to survive – you need to survive. Beyond survival, there’s more. You must ‘become.’ If you want to live a comfortable life, you have to hone these skills. In this book, we’d be discussing the life skills that you need to survive anyway in the world because you must own it. It has to be a part of you.
Everyone advises parents on how to raise their teens. Nobody truly teaches teens how to take care of themselves outside of their homes. This is a caring book. made with love for you in mind. Watch how you'll turn out if you apply these talents in your life. The world will be glad to have you in it.
Every change starts with a choice and decision to make that change. That’s how it is with leaving home too. Not only mental preparedness and packing your bags, but you’d also need more than that and you have to be ready to put in the work. In this book, there are detailed skills and how to practically apply them in your life.
Before we start to talk about the skills you have to hone, let’s prepare the fertile soil for them to fall on. It is important to note that life is a result of our choices and every decision that we make. The power of your choices would determine how well you use these skills when you eventually know them. Whether you like it or not, you are making a choice right now and those choices would affect you tomorrow. For example, you can choose to do assignments or to spend time on social media - whatever decision you make has an effect and you reap the consequences of your choices. Before every action, there are decisions. When you don’t pay attention to the things that you do, you are affecting your life. Great people pay attention to what they do. To approach life in a better way and to live a satisfactory life, you have one of the spices. Make a choice to live life better. Also, nothing prepares you for the emotional rush you’d feel as if you are about to take a step out into a world of your own. You have to get ready mentally and emotionally. It is really about to be an adventurous journey.
This stage of life is one of the most important transitioning stages because you have a whole new world that you are not familiar with, waiting for you on the other side. You may be thinking of and getting excited about the idea of leading your life, but you may not know what it takes to lead a life. It’s a different ball game; that I could tell. Here's one thing to do – pay attention. Yes, you have to pay attention. Reading this book is a choice, a decision that sprang from your hunger, wanting to know what next. ‘I have to leave home, but I don’t know if I’d do great on my own," It’s fine to think that and simply great that you are reading this book which is a choice that would affect your future positively. Have I asked you to use your seat belt for this wonderful ride? Oh yes! You are in for a heck of a ride. You want to live fully and get prepared for the journey ahead. Fasten your seat belts, and ignition on!
