    THE AUTHOR

    WHAT'S IN A NAME?

    What's in a name?

Said to be the largest watercourse in the world according to discharge volume, and possibly the (disputed) longest one too, such is: The Amazon River.

But what does it mean in terms of symbology, when the name for one thing comes to indicate (or even become synonymous with) another entity entirely?

Amazon: a parrot of tropical America with typically green plumage.

Amazon: perhaps real, perhaps mythical member of the tribe of notorious women warriors from the northern outer limits of the world, which caused the word to become equated with tall, physically strong, ferocious, strong-willed women.

Amazonite: bluish green gemstone; mineral of feldspar classification used in manufacturing fine glass and porcelain.

Amazon: e-commerce platform with the motto spend less, smile more plus free shipping on millions of great deals, set up to exist according to four main principles: customer obsession rather than competitor focus, passion for invention, commitment to operational excellence, and long-term thinking. https://www.aboutamazon.com/about-us

(Now also known, in some circles, as The Zon: an abbreviated term which began proliferating across the net in recent years due to the company's proclivity for engaging in censorship of expressions, opinions, and products that it apparently prefers people not have (or not have access to).

Clearly, though known by most people as just plain old, fun, incomparable Amazon, the company has inherently infused society with a sense of an invisible The before its name.

As in: even though many other online retail
