Hello! Welcome!
Are you poking your nose inside this book? Well, poke your nose a little further, and you will find tales from the Fairy Story Tree, which were told to my grandmother Winnie. They are all very different stories; Some are in rhyme, and some are not; some are long and exciting, whilst others are extremely short and funny. There is something for everyone.
Read about the fairy who lost her hearing and panicked when she found her friends in great danger. Or about the wicked witch who stole something magical from Saharashand. Find out if you (yes, YOU!) dared to go on a dangerous but exciting adventure to retrieve it. Or maybe, swim with Prince Kariuki, who discovers something very shocking beneath the surface.
These are just some of the stories to choose from, but I hope you keep your nose in the book and read them all.
A story is like going on an exciting adventure where you don’t know what is going to happen. To start your story adventure, place your finger on the first leaf and follow the line to the end to work out the special word. Turn the page, and your stories are ready to begin.

The Fairy Story Tree
I found out about the Fairy Story Tree from my grandmother Winnie. Her full name was Winifred, a popular name in those days, but everyone shortened it to Winnie. Sometimes her family would call her Fred as a joke. Winnie had an older brother called Rory and a scruffy terrier mongrel dog called Woof. The family initially regretted calling him Woof when they realised it was embarrassing calling him when out for walks; Woof, Woof, Woof,
they would shout for him, and people thought they were barking mad! Woof, however, would not answer to any other name except for Woof, so of course, his name stayed. Over the years, the family became fond of his name because it made everyone laugh, and they loved to laugh and joke with everyone they met.
One day, Winnie’s best friend Molly said to her, Have you ever noticed that your family are all named after animal noises? Winnie is a sound for a horse, Woof a bark of a dog, and Rory the sound of a lion’s roar. Your dad’s nickname is Buzz which is the sound of a bee, and your mum is called Pearl, which is purr for a cat with an L on the end.
Winnie pretended to look surprised. Neigh,
she said, I hadn’t noticed that!
and they both fell about laughing.
When Winnie was nine years old, the family moved away, and for four years, lived on the edge of a very large forest. At first, the family took short walks in the forest as they didn’t want to get lost. They had heard terrible stories of people going missing and not being able to find their way out again. But once they got used to the forest, they ventured further and further inside until they were confident they knew the forest around them inside and out. The children were then allowed to go out and play on their own.
Winnie and Rory both loved the forest. They would spend hours climbing trees, swinging from the branches like monkeys, making dens, and building wigwams out of wood. They would play: hide and seek, tag, cops and robbers, and track and find with their friends. They played ball games together in the forest glade, which Woof loved to join in with as well. He would run away with the ball, with the children shouting after him, Woof, Woof, bring the ball back.
At the weekends, they would be out all day in the forest. They would take sandwiches, a bottle of their mother’s homemade lemonade, and chocolate cookies. Everything in those days was homemade and tasted so much better.
In the summer, the family sometimes camped out at night
