    STORY 1

There are places of amazing beauty in the Italian Alps. Snow-capped mountains frame deep valleys with pine forests that grow around huge stone boulders that look as if they've been there for a very long time.

In one such forest at the end of a valley, in a hollow of a very tall, old pine tree, four little black squirrels were born.

To be honest, they were not completely black, but their fur was dark brown and red in colour. The baby squirrels were born at the end of spring when the sun had almost melted the snow and wild rosemary was blooming with soft pink flowers everywhere, and the first green grass began to reach for the sun.

It will not be long before beautiful crocuses will appear in abundance, sprinkled throughout the lush green meadows that cows graze on.

Spring is a hungry time for many wild animals. The mother squirrel was constantly in search of food. She scampered into the forest in the morning and came running back to feed the squirrels with her milk, to check how they were doing and that everything was fine. And then back again into the forest in search of pine cones, mushrooms, dry berries, and nuts that have remained hidden since the previous autumn.

All wild animals and birds in the forests and mountains are looking forward to spring and summer when the forests and meadows will turn green with lush grass and plants, many flowers will bloom, and wild berries, mushrooms, and many insects will appear.

Four nimble little squirrels grew quickly and were impatiently waiting for their mother squirrel, looking out from the hollow where they were hidden from danger. There was an incredible number of interesting things around the tree they lived on and being curious, couldn’t wait to explore outside their hollow.

They could see green lizards basking on rocks down below covered with green moss and colourful lichen, admire the first butterflies that fluttered everywhere, watch where the wild forest bees were in such a hurry, and listen to the chirping of hundreds of grasshoppers.

The baby squirrels would freeze with their fluffy ears raised if a bird squawked sharply or if marmots whistled in the distance. Everything in this new world for them was unusual and mysterious. Mother squirrel answered all their questions in the evenings when she returned to the hollow. She put her four squirrels to bed and, covering them with her fluffy tail, told them stories from the forest. The baby squirrels listened carefully and gently fell asleep, and with them their mother, tired from worries.

Finally, one sunny day, the mother squirrel took her cubs for a tree walk. For squirrels, this means jumping from one branch to another and trying not to fall down. Below, that is, at the foot of the tree
