It was Friday afternoon, and the Nursing School was empty. I had to make a stop in the ladies' room before running to the station to catch the train home.

Going up the stairs, I saw two young men standing outside my destination. It was odd to see men there during school hours, but that late after class it could be dangerous for a young woman like me.

I stopped midway up the stairs and stared at them. They hadn’t seen me and with my heart beating faster I hoped they wouldn’t.

Then I heard a thud and the man who was on the wall bend forward, gasping. Don’t hit me again! Please! He whimpered breathlessly.

I thought I knew the voice that cried. When he raised his head, I was sure. It was Julian Hoffer, his eyes scared to death. The only boy studying fashion in the vocational school.

Shut up faggot! The assailant hissed and drew back his arm, ready to let it fly forward to punch the other man in the face.

I knew the other voice too, and that well-shaped ass that went with it. It was Tomas Muller from the co-located vocational school. A known bully and the wet dream of all future nurses.

I should have walked away but I felt I couldn't stand watching. Being the only immigrant kid in my class, I was
