    How to Read This Book

The purpose of this new book series is not only to entertain readers and stir their imaginations, but also to introduce older music to the newer generations who might not have had the opportunity to experience great music from 30+ years ago.

In this book, Chapter 0, the Flipside chapter, and the Afterward can be read like normal chapters. But the rest of the chapters are titled by the track of music to which they correspond from the album. They are best read while listening to the corresponding track. I have tried to pace each chapter to be in sync with the music being played, so try to read at your regular pace. You should reach the end of each chapter around the same time that the song stops playing.

However, if you find that your reading pace is not in sync with the song, make changes accordingly if possible, but if it is not possible or if you cannot concentrate on both mediums at the same time, I recommend reading the chapter first and then listening to the track afterward, allowing your mind to imagine the scene being played out. As for the music itself, it should be fairly easy to find, especially if you search for it on the internet.

My intentions are to find a new way of making music fun to listen to as well as to share my own personal passion for ancient music. If you discover that you really like what I’ve done with the fusion of fictional writing and music, I encourage you to give it a try for yourself too. And if you end up with a story that you are very pleased with, send it to me. I’d love to read it!

I truly hope that you not only enjoy this book but also that your love of music grows in both width and depth.

Chapter 0: The Garage of Wonders

It was a typical hot summer day, the kind just perfect for summer break. But school wasn’t over yet. So Max let his mind wander to when school would be over and he could take advantage of days like this. Just a few more weeks, and he would be free.

Rob’s bike bumped into Max’s from behind. Max looked back in surprise, but Rob just grinned devilishly. Rob could never just bike. He had to pester Max while doing it. Come to think of it, Rob could never just do anything. He was always turning an activity into his own personal opportunity to do something daring...or annoying. Rob was really competitive, whereas Max was more easy-going.

Even in that very moment, Rob interrupted Max’s thoughts with, Come on, slowpoke. Race ya to your uncle’s! And off he flew down the sidewalk. Well, Max normally preferred a leisurely pace while riding his bike, but a challenge like that just couldn’t go unanswered. He slammed on the pedals and half-stood on his bike for some extra pumping power. Of course, Rob had gotten a head start, but Max was bigger and, therefore, faster!

Green lawn after green lawn whizzed by. Rob barely dodged a pink mailbox as he tried to cut a corner to gain a little extra distance, but Max was gaining on him. Rob knew it too. Max, watch out for that car coming up. Max stopped pedaling long enough to turn his head around to look for the car. Ah! he grunted in frustration. Under his breath he growled, I fall for that every time. There was no car. Rob said that knowing Max would slow down to look for it, and he took the opportunity to pedal even more furiously as they closed the distance to Uncle Lou’s house. His triumphant laugh carried back to Max, and it made losing the race that much more difficult to accept.

The two boys got off their bikes and threw them to the ground in front of Uncle Lou’s house. Max glared at Rob, but Rob answered it with a goofy, victorious smile. Every time, Max growled in frustration again.

Ha ha. Don’t worry about it, Max. You’ll get used to being in second place all the time. Max took a swing at him, but Rob had been ready for it and quickly dodged, giggling the whole time. This was their friendship—Rob enjoying every opportunity to get the better of Max, and Max just barely having the patience to tolerate it. But they had been friends for as long as they could remember. It was just the way things were, and neither of them would have wanted it any other way.

Max pulled the house keys out of his pocket and eyed them to spot which one went to the front door. Rob asked, How much is your uncle paying you again to take care of his house while he’s gone? Max didn’t answer at first. He was too busy trying each key in the keyhole. I get half, right?

That got Max to answer. Of course you don’t get half, Rob. You’re just along for the ride. I’m getting paid because it’s me who’s taking care of the house. Duh.

    Duh, yourself.

    Duh, infinite.

Well, that was that. Nothing is bigger than infinite, and for once Max won against Rob.

    Duh, negative infinite.

    What?? There’s no such thing!

That’s not what my dad says. Rob’s dad was a math teacher at the local college. There’s no arguing against a math teacher. Everyone knows that. So Max once again reluctantly accepted defeat...or maybe it was a tie. In either case, he hadn’t won, and that’s all that mattered. So a tie was just as bad as a loss. On the other hand, Rob hadn’t won either, and that was a win in itself.

Max left it at that. And finally he found the front door key. The two boys barged into the living
